Hey everyone, I've been experiencing bad vibrations that seem to be RPM specific in my 98 Tacoma (3.4L V6, manual transmission). Let me give you the run down on symptoms.

It started about 4 weeks ago when I noticed RPM specific vibrations in 3rd-5th gear that would appear between 2000-3000 RPM, typically most pronounced around 2500 RPM. They may have been more speed related, since there were specific speeds that the vibrations would appear at in all gears. In 5th gear, the vibration would reappear at any speeds above 90 mph. I checked my drive shaft and it looked like my u-joints were in good condition, but the carrier bearing was shredded, so I replaced it thinking it would fix the issue. Literally nothing changed, so I've been driving on it ever since seeing if the issue would get worse and expose the root cause. The RPM ranges where the vibration would occur did change over the past couple of weeks. It disappeared in 4th and 5th and became more pronounced in 2nd and 3rd. After a 6 hour drive yesterday, the problem has gotten much, much worse. The vibration is now noticeable in all in all gears (though much less pronounced at high speeds and in higher gears, 3rd, 4th, and 5th), and the engine is shaking a decent amount in idle. I popped the hood and noticed the engine itself was shaking quite a bit, and when I opened the throttle, the vibration would disappear.

The most specific symptoms as of right now are a noticeable "clank" or "thud" sound when initially accelerating quickly from neutral to first, or quick acceleration in 2nd from a slow speed. Further, it's not just a vibration anymore. The whole car shakes pretty bad now in all gears, but it's extremely bad in 2nd. It literally feels like the wheel is gonna fall off. The shaking is only really bad when the engine is under load, especially when going up hills. The origin of the shake seems to be up front, more specifically the front driver's side, but I can't be sure. I don't notice any lack of power in any gears or at any speeds.

The drive line looks good. The carrier bearing was installed correctly and u-joints are good. The transmission and transfer case mounts look good. I haven't checked the engine mounts, but right now I suspect they are the problem.

My questions are: could this be coming from a bad wheel bearing? Bad CV joint? Bad ball joint(s)? Bad engine mounts? Bad fuel/air mixture at low rpm? Could the worn carrier bearing have caused damaged to my transmission or clutch/flywheel? I know a decent amount mechanically, but I'm still pretty amateur when it comes to this kind of stuff.

The check engine light did just turn on a few hours before I am posting this, so I'll read the code and get back to you guys on that.

Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks for reading guys.

as to the speed related vibrations… Grab the front axles and give them a good wiggle… the inner CV support bearing(s) could be worn.
