Keep an eye on this... if it's just your instrument cluster or shifting business not a huge deal imo. If the RPMs were indeed acting that whacky, the crankshaft position sensor in these trucks has been giving a lot of us trouble though not sure if it would have impacted yours that seems would have been built ~2 years ago at this point. ...and there has been some anecdotal connections made between heat and sensor degradation.

Is this really the only issue you're experiencing?
What was your truck build date and location of build?
How does it idle (and in what RPM range when warm and in Park)?
What kind of MPGs are you getting combined (speeds 65 mph or less)?

Damn, I thought I was going to get to the end without someone saying this.

It definitely sounds like it downshifted for you to use engine braking. It's a known fact that it can and will do this. Furthermore everything you have said sounds completely reasonable for a downshift into engine braking. Just because the RPMs went up doesn't mean you are going to accelerate. Not understanding that is a result of never driving a manual me thinks. The auto only generation will soon be upon us..perhaps they already are.

Post #10 I mentioned engine braking as a possible suspect.

This in bold is actually the one thing I'm starting to like about this auto tranny now that it seems to be behaving properly. I've never had an auto that would properly downshift when going down a hill to minimize braking. It's a great thing!

I've had the same issue multiple times... driving an incline down shifts to 4th in the 3k range and hangs in 4th longer than it should on the downside of the hill where I've noticed only tapping the gas peddle drops the rpm.

Like others have said since I've own manual vehicles I always figured it was a form of engine breaking. Even though I don't need any engine breaking on this truck with the lack of power to get back up to speed. Butt after owning a 86 samurai on 33" on stock gears this truck is fast lmao.
