I want to say 60mph is 2400rpms in 5th, but I could be wrong. If no one else posts I will find out when I drive next this Saturday.

I anticipated alittle more rpms than that, but I have never driven a TRD OR manual. I know my base 2wd, 4 cylinder, 5 speed does 2k rpms in 5th gear at 60mph.

The 2016/2017 v6 manuals I've driven were around 2000-2200 rpm in 6th. I remember thinking that 60-65 would be a nice sweet spot for cruising, that the truck was very quiet at that speed, and that the motor and gearing felt well matched.

I have the TRD Off road manual and mine is showing about 2100rpm at that speed.

Depending on tire size you will be 1900 to 2100.

What I'm curious about is getting similar gearing as the 6spd auto in the 6spd manual. Enough with the bull crap of manuals getting worse mpg highway. Boggles my mind why you would put 5th and 6th so close to each other.

Just another scheme to get people thinking autos get better mpg, pay a higher premium. Clearly they can make it have a better OD gear if Toyota wanted to. Screwed up man.

The lower gear ratio was a huge selling point for me. Actually wish they had geared these trucks with 4.56 or 4.88s. I regularly get 20-21 mpg out of my truck on my 60 mile commute and I am happy with that. After all it is a truck. I use sixth gear down to as low as 30 mph when driving around town with out lugging. Picked this habit up driving my Cummins for over a decade great for fuel economy and can basically just let it idle and keep up with traffic. I skip 5th gear most of the time in normal driving. I have found Fifth is great for towing 4500-5000 lbs at highway speeds though.

My V6 auto is turning less than 2K at 70. Sounds like the manual is making the engine work more and no additional gas mileage.

Don't even start with this crap.

Toyota is clearly trying to push people into autos. More money.

Also, a truck can clearly get better than 20mpg. Look at the Colorado Diesel.

If they put a good OD gear in this truck it would be crushing autos avg. Mpg. Don't fall for this stupid talk.

Well it is a truck... The way it is geared currently allows for decent mileage and allows for you to be able to pass some one at 70 without down shifting. Works just fine for me. If I had been buying for mileage I would have bought a Prius.

Well, I would have bought an auto if I didn't want to shift.

Pointless argument. I don't mind downshifting to pass in 6th @70mph, neither do many.

Bottom line. Give us a better OD gear. 1500 RPM @ 65mph

So if the TRD OR Manual is right around 2k rpms at 60mph why does it get such worse mileage than my 4 cylinder, 2wd, 5 speed, base Tacoma? I am able to easily get 27mpg on the highway and do over 450miles per tank, and this is at 2k rpms at 60mph...

Seems like most people around here are getting 21-22mpg with their TRD OR Manual. Does the weight make that much difference? What other factors?

    There's a lot of things.

Depends on altitude, tire sizes, ethanol vs ethanol free fuel, shift points, aerodynamics, 4wd vs 2wd drivetrain, etc.

That little base 2.7L 5spd MT 5lug is good for a solid 35+mpg and would be even better with a 6th or 7th OD gear.

Apparently these guys on the forums think it's appropriate to get 20mpg in a truck.

You have a smaller engine, less weight, narrower tires, a 2WD drivetrain, and you're looking at your best-case highway numbers. You can't just compare that to a TRD OR with a V6, wider tires, 4WD drivetrain, and more weight. Apples and oranges.

Apples and oranges. You can't compare diesel vs. gasoline fuel economy by the gallon because one gallon of diesel fuel has around 13% more energy per gallon than gasoline. Diesel is also more expensive per gallon. Once you start factoring that in, the V6 Tacoma's rated gas mileage doesn't make that much of a difference in real-world terms compared to the Colorado diesel, but at least with the Tacoma you get a whole lot more horsepower.

It's more like 25-30% more energy than gasoline. So yes Apples to Oranges.

When you calculate that vs. 23mpg hwy on Tacoma 4x4 vs. Diesel Colorado 4x4 it's basically the 30% efficiency that the diesel has.

You'd have to rack up quite a few miles on the Colorado diesel in order for it to prove worthwhile. Especially considering Tacomas generous resale value, it doesn't bode well for the typical diesel resale value vs. The juggernaut Tacoma resale value, that's sort of an anomaly.

Bottom line. They really need a better OD gear for the 6MT :D

    Thanks for the replies.

Where did the diesel come in to play here? I was comparing my Tacoma 2wd 4 cyl 5 speed base truck to a TRD OR manual.

Thanks anywaya for the replies. I am not considering the GM trucks. Sorry.
