RPMs won't go higher than 3k

I’ve got a 2.7 4cyl. 2001 Tacoma.
It’s got 400,000 miles reading. But it’s been rebuilt. My issue is that when pressing on the gas pedal to the floor, it’s doesn’t increase in rpm’s. It’s stays around 2-3 thousand rpm’s. It has new spark plugs and coils. Not sure what they did to the engine due to me getting the truck with no info. But any recommendations on what would cause that?

 

How many miles on the plugs?

 

Less than 150 miles. Literally just changed them.

 

What other info do you have? Are there any codes? Does it remain consistently at that RPM or just when you give it the gas and it won't go any faster?

With no idea just what was done to the engine or Just how many miles ago this has happened.

I have been told rebuilt means many different things to different people.

You need to start with the basics If you have Air a leak down test if not a compression test.

Botched Timing Chain job.

Poor injectors or lack of fuel pressure .

Lets hope you get lucky and it is simple.

Any local friends that can help? Perhaps post in your regional forum and meet new Toyota addicted friends.

 

There must be a reason why the computer will not allow full throttle. I would check all connections to all sensors like temp, RPM, MAF and absolute manifold pressure sensors. this would be a good start.
I wouldn't fret about a botched timing chain just yet.

 

Need more background.

Why not have the 'rebuilder' correct their problem?

 

Could be a number of things but a bad camshaft sensor or crankshaft sensor or the connectors will do this or wire harness damage possibly cracked to these two sensors

I just replaced them 3 months ago

 

Whew!

 

I had ONE go bad around 400k and replaced just that one.
I replaced all of them just recently because the haltech wasn’t getting alone with them.

the coils don’t necessary throw a code and fail in different ways like not working at higher rpm’s but work at lower rpm’s just fine

 

After 13 years i replaced all the coils with Standard Ignition Blue Streak UF495 and omg, it’s a different animal. The idle is smooth as silk. Very impressed

 

Check the throttle cable?
