RSI Smart Cap

Would love to see a write up on how you plumbed your air compressor with you water tank.

I have an ARB dual compressor sitting in my garage waiting for me to get my crap together and take on that project-- pressurized water but also convenient for airing up my tires.

 

The wait was painful, but I can say that this topper has been life changing. Especially for a guy that was anti topper for a long time, Im pretty stoked on this topper. Ive had it a month and still need to dial it all in. I just haven't had any time

 

I don’t use the compressor to pressurize the water system. Beforehand, I had a waterport that I would pressurize for water.

The air compressor is bolted to the side of the storage bin. I ran an 8 awg cable from the battery to the bed. Drilled a hole in the composite bedside and ran the cable up to the bin. The power supply is fused closer to the battery and grounded on the truck frame. To turn on the compressor, I flick the switch on the compressor itself. No need for switches in the cab or dash. I kept it simple.

The water supply is just an Ironman 13gal tank hooked up to an RV inline water filter and then a Joolca pump and hose kit. The pump plugs into an outlet I installed in the empty small bin on the passenger side. I waterproofed the bin to reduce water and mud infiltration on the electrical bits. It’s fused and grounded near the battery too.

 

Picked up my RSI Cap yesterday, assembled and mounted today. Thanks to Mike’s Custom Truck for the quick delivery. Unfortunately it was supposed to be an Adventure Cap. No fault of Mike’s, it looks like RSI shipped the right external box with the wrong internal windoors according to all the stickers and factory sealing. Mike’s was responsive and great to work with. They guaranteed they would make it right and ship the molle windoors as soon as they can get them. Will have to shift mounting plans til then.

P.S. If anyone is dying to swap sport for adventure windoors in the meantime lmk

 

possibly, straight swap? I don’t have a cap yet, but I think Mikes has some adventure ones in stock that I might buy.

Hi Mike, any updates on replacement parts cost and availability? I’m more concerned about vandalism/theft than I am warranty issues.

Your Correct doors are scheduled to get to me on Friday. Short of any freight issues you should see them next week.

 

Is your OVS270 on the load bars as well?

 

There is no price currently just for the glass. Smart Cap has just been replacing everyone's for free if there is a breakage. The only price I have access to is a complete side flange which is $880. If they update me with a glass price I will let you know.

I have 4 More Adventure models coming in on Friday if you want to take @AGORTaco22 glass doors it would save you $200. We would cover shipping on the doors.

 

I have a Prinsu rack on the RSI with the iKamper and OVS 270. I mounted the OVS brackets upside down which gives me just enough clearance for the iKamper to open. I am looking at ordering some of the extended OVS mounts when they are back in stock since I do not have the length onto the Prinsu I would prefer. https://runnin4tacos.com/products/r4t-extended-awning-bracket

 

Oh wow, that is much sooner than I expected. I may just take these glass ones off and ride with an empty bed just to make sure nothing happens to them before then! You guys rock!

I'm trying to figure out how to get more clearance from the windoor to my awning so that I have more access to the bed on that side. I'll take a look at the R4T brackets.

 

The R4T are only going to give you more horizontal reach not vertical. I would say in order to get more clearance you would want to do something like a riser off of the roof rack/rail. All in all I feel like I have pretty good clearance, but if you are wanting full door extension then that is probably the route to go. I would have to lift my whole iKamper up higher and get more wind drag etc so I settled for the clearance I have.

 

That makes sense on the R4T mount. I was thinking about adding a 1/2-1" spacer just to get a little more access when the awning is on the truck. I'll keep looking for options for that.

 

Can you get a good rear picture? So I can see how you mounted everything.

 

@Tacodog does this help? I used all of the OVS and Prinsu OEM mounts. Had to drill out the Prinsu mounts to fit the M8 hardware for the RSI.

Couple of comments I would like to add. You also might find it useful. The bolts that came with the Prinsu rack, that mount to the load bars, do rust. The head will snap off. I had to remove 3 broken bolts from 3 bars. I ran to Home Depot and bought 1/4"x20 - 1" stainless steel bolts to replace all of them. There's no salt from where I live fyi.

 

I live in southern california and have the same issue with my Prinsu-- 4 bolt heads sheered off with signs of rust arround the base. Its a 5 year old rack, so its by no means knew, but bummed I have screws that are PITA to remove.

The culprit (or my theory at least): the company that built/installed it, over tightened the bolts way too much. Just a guess though.
