RSI Smart Cap

They're still working on it I guess. I will update once I get it installed.

 

My rear hatch door is making cracking noise while opening the door. At first I thought it might be the struts, after removing both struts the noise persists. This tells me that the hinges are toast. I did a search on buying new hinges but non are listed for sale. Does anyone know where to buy these hinges?

I'll post some pics after I remove the door and the old hinges.

I would just contact RSI, ask them what hinges they use and explain the issue. I was impressed with their customer service when I reached out for the latch covers. They were very helpful. Can't hurt.

Can the side storage bins be installed on the evo sport? Any info on install?
I'm thinking of ordering and using one but want to make sure all works

 

Yes they bolt right in.

 

Are they going to make half bins. That bolt in the front half of the opening?

So I ordered my cap through the closest local dealer in February of 2022. Initially I was told that the cap would be delivered in May of the same year. Since then both myself and the dealer have reached out multiple times for updates, each time being told that it was 1-3 months out. Here we are at the end of May in 2023, a couple of weeks ago I was told it would be here in June, as of today they're pushing it again to July. I'm feeling like a real dummy for getting a smartcap right about now... any insight from tacomaworld?

I'd cancel the order from that vendor and order from @Mike's Custom Toys if he has it in stock or more shipments coming in soon. 1+years is a crazy time to wait...

If there is a DCLB EVO Sport or EVOa in stock @Mike's Custom Toys that can be shipped to me I would certainly do it at this point. With their plant up and running now I thought the timelines would be more or less locked in so I scheduled some road trips for June that I wont have the topper for as of now. I have been wanting one of these caps since 2019, finally saved up enough money to get one, and now I have been waiting for 16 months. Thanks for listening to my sob story

 

So... this is a bit complicated. A couple of observations - curious to what others have found and as always take the below with a truck full of salt.

1) Dates - RSI kept pushing back their 'available to order' estimates on their website for over a year. Both 5 and 6 ft Tacos have been getting new dates, with backorder buttons still greyed out.

2) Mods, especially to the latches - are not being delivered as described. For instance, in early 2022 RSI posted a video on YouTube that "latches that one could lock from the inside" would be available by year end (meaning 2022). This was reinforced by their verbiage (also posted in 2022) to their FAQs webpage. Now my latest inquiry to the dealer is that this will not be available until July 2023 (at the soonest), and RSI has changed their FAQs.

Preliminary intel indicates that even if you order now, meaning delivery after July, you won't get the new latches. But have the opportunity to buy a conversion kit, sometime in the future. If you delay your order until July - then you go to the back of the line, and still may or may not get latches.

Why should I have to buy something that was supposed to be included?

3) Windows - I saw at least one forum where someone was washing their truck and pushed in on the slide window from the outside and it opened, even though it was locked from the inside. Not good if accurate.

From my view - I waited to purchase until 2023 so I could get upgraded latches as advertised. Further, dealer's site, and RSI, kept mentioning 'ship by' dates that have come and gone. Upon pressing, shipment that was supposed to happen by 31 March 2023 may happen in June. I've had to rearrange logistics a couple of times, may not get what I ordered (meaning advertised), etc.

On a positive note - been dealing with Cody from Offroad Alliance. He has been very quick with responses, shares what he can. So not a ding on the dealer at all, and I'd work with him again. But second guessing RSI to be sure. Hope to change my mind on delivery of course.

Just my $.02. Open to ideas and corrections.

 

1) Throughout this process I have felt like I'm in an abusive relationship. I am 100% that they dont like how this has gone either but I wish they were just more forthcoming about everything. If you cant deliver on a date then dont put it out there and just stick with TBD. In the 10 or so delivery postponements there is always a reason, "supply chain from Africa", "We're building a new plant in the states so now yours will be coming from there", "permitting issues with the new factory build", "the factory flooded", "City of Fort Worth emission regulations wont let us paint right now"... I thought June would be the end of it but its not and as long as I have held out and dealt with this I think I just want off the ride now.

2) The mods are one of the best features about these caps, I assume by this time next year they will be more readily available. Its a shame that people with caps cant really customize them with RSI parts yet but hey, at least they have the caps. The latches will be a must have once available but I'm not holding my breath as of now.

3) I saw that video, its not good but I'm sure it will be addressed... eventually

My dealer has been great too. RSI has given me a lot of communication but after almost 1.5 years that doesn't mean a lot to me anymore.

 

gotcha and yes, that is complicated and seeing that you have a DCLB makes more sense now as well, but yea..overall, this is a RSI issue and not the vendors.

1) 5ft beds toppers, at least the Sports had some shipped to customers in the past 2-3 weeks. My good buddy finally got his (short bed) that he ordered in Nov '22.

2) The dates for revised latches has been pushed so many times, I wouldn't rely on it. I can see where you are coming from though in wanting to wait for it. I did as well when I bought mine in October '22 and glad i didn't wait on the latches.

3) Agree with you as well, the window opening from pushing from the outside is a major flaw. To add, I was not a fan of the re-designed window and latch position (vertical) but it grew on me after seeing a few more pics, but think the new windoors being full glass is pretty nice. I've always noticed Offroad Alliance being responsive and it must suck for them to have to deal with what i assume is many frustrated customers.

At this point, either continue to wait or hope a used one pops up close to you. There was a DCLB RSI cap for sale in WA state last week on FB Marketplace, but that is quite the drive for you.

 

Mike have you heard anything about putting a 3rd gen SmartCap on the 4th gen Tacoma. It's looking like 4th gen bed has different dimensions.

 

In some of the videos I've seen, they've stated that the 4th gen bed has 7% more volume. This was done by making the bed sides taller. It will likely not fit "well".

 

#3 was posted by me. Mike from Mike's Custom Toys reached out to RSI and they quickly addressed the window security issue by sending me new doors with locks that hopefully won't fail. I will report back once they are installed. Overall, though I was really impressed with RSI's customer service on this along with Mike's fast action as well. I also was not a fan of the new window design but after having it for a few weeks I dig it. As long as the windows stayed locked of course. Added a couple of more recent pics of the new design on my truck.
