If you have a friend or 2 and it’s not 100+ degrees outside then it would be easier but on your own in a hot garage, it can be a bit of a bitch. I recommend setting aside a half day at least to assemble. I spent an hour or so each day over the course of a week assembling little by little plus doing the bed prep stuff.

Alright - I got it together and got it on my Tacoma. I tapped into the tail light and it seems to be working.
The boxes came well packed and the pieces fit together fairly easily. I only needed a spare set of hands with the front and rear flanges to get them aligned and bolted together.
Huge shoutout to Chris at @OffroadAlliance.com for helping submit a warranty claim on the missing pigtail for the 3rd brake light.
The most important thing is that the pup approves (and Ripley does).

Had my Smartcap about three weeks now and went to lock one of my latches and can’t get the key to go in. Anybody have these lock up or this issue before? The black inner tab for the key hole is stuck.

I had this same problem because of super dry locks. Ended up putting some "Wet" bike lube into each of the locks. It's supposed to repel water and inhibit corrosion - has worked great so far!

What's the series / dimensions of these 8020 extrusions you used for these DIY bars? Looks killer!

Does anyone know if the positive pressure vent in the roof is reversible? What I’m wanting to do is reverse it, remove the filter for better air flow, install two additional vents somewhere else in the bed as intakes and then install an exhaust fan under the roof vent.

It looks to be welded to the roof panel. I think you’d have to cut it out and weld it back in.

That’s what it looked like to me as well but I think there’s supposed to be a way to change the air filter, though, so I was hoping that perhaps it could be reversed. I don’t want to mess with cutting the cap up. I may be able to accomplish the same thing by continuing to use that as the intake and place the exhaust port somewhere in the bed, probably one is the cubby holes I never use.

i have the commercial model so I don’t have the size vents, I also have the bins so it would be irrelevant anyway.

the issue I’m having is that with my dog in the back I don’t think there’s adequate air flow… there is fresh air getting in but not much gets pushed out. I have a fan back there to circulate air for him but it’s just the same shitty air.

What I would really love to do is find a way to get it air conditioned.

What is the purpose of installing the/an active exhaust point? If you install something that is more powerful than the positive pressure vent you'll run into a negative pressure which will cause the bed to ingest additional air/dust etc from out side of the bed.

For example if you're at a stand still like at a red light and you're active exhaust is going you will naturally start bringing in external air from any point it can enter.

Thanks, I understand how pressure differences work. If you read my entire post my reasoning for wanting to do this is in the post.

I’m skeptical of how much of a difference the positive pressure vent makes at keeping the inside of the cap clean anyways. I have my bed sealed up as tight as I can without sealing up the tailgate and everything back there still gets dusty.

If I end up installing an exhaust fan I’ll end up sealing the tailgate too… once the tailgate is sealed the only way dust is getting in is when I open the back up.

I looked into these extensively, I really wanted to believe they would work but in the end the conclusion seems that they’re underpowered expensive pieces of shit. The direction I’m headed if I do AC is a mini split unit like what’s used in heavy equipment or ambulances.

I love my top, didn’t put near as much caulk as others and only have a small leak near the front, some plumbers putty will fix it up. I have been wanting a passthru from the cab to the bed just for shits and giggles, I tried to use a bike inner tube and it’ll work if I get the right size, like a fat bike tire. Has anyone else tried this? I’m also thinking it’ll help with snow getting caught between the glass and topper as we got hit with 2” this morning and it stuck in there. I worry about losing pressure in the inner tube but might try and use nitrogen to keep it from deflating. Anyone try this or have a better method?

I’m looking to mount my Prinsu rack up top this weekend, but am having the devil of a time finding info for the correct bolt size to go in the pre-fitted nuts on the Smartcap tracks. Do you remember what size bolts worked for yours? Thanks!

Good to know. I didn’t dig in and research them yet, just had it bookmarked for later. I guess I can delete that and not waste my time. Thanks!
