Anyone running a RTT daily? My bed rack system will put the entire RTT above the cab so no wind blockage. I don't really care about MPGs but I dot know what constant wind to the front of the RTT would do to it over time.

I have the option to take it off and store it but at 130 pounds that doesn't seem like a one man job.

    Thoughts?

Mine only comes off for winter. Doesn’t make any noise or anything but mine sits below the cab, not over it.

That's the only thing that I'm thinking about.

Mine would be literally over the cab

The tent would be fine over time but the cover of it will take a beating. Depending what brand you bought, check with them to see if they sell replacement covers. Bugs and the stuff they have inside them can make the soft covers really hard to clean. Maybe keep it armorall'd or similar to make it easy to clean.

    I agree.

    I store mine during winter.

That's a great idea, especially saving that rack from the elements at the same time too.

Looks like you store your spare tire too!! haha

That's a really good idea that I didn't think of, puttinga repelant on it to make it easier to clean.

I'm planning on getting a smittybilt tent as it will be my first time RTTing and I want to get a feel for if I even like it, before spending in upwards of $4k on a bigger/better tent.

If the cover were to ever fail I'm pretty confident that I could make something that would be good enough until I got a new tent.

Personally think it looks dumb when people run them all the time.
I do understand it is a pain to get on/off without a hoist system.

Right now I don't have a garage because I rent, but I do have a locking shed to put the tent in if I don't like having it on my truck. I think getting it on and off by myself (wife is only 5' 2.567849272" and 98 pounds lol) would be the tricky part.

In that case, you should check for a used one. People sell them quite often if they change their mind about owning them, or don't have a place to store them. That might be better than shelling out the bucks for a new one if you haven't used one before.

Hmm not so much wondering about the "dumb looking part" as much as the ruining the tent very prematurely, but thanks for the input :hattip:

Any guy neighbor would surely give you a quick hand if needed. Once they're unbolted and on the ground, you could move it with a regular dolly.

The problem is I live in Hawaii. I've seen only ONE other person with an RTT in the past year so not only is the resale market absent but actual retailers on island are limited to none as well.

Aahh, that's why you're going with Smittybilt, because of the 4 Wheel Parts out there, right? I went out there quite a few years back to work the Truck Fest in Honolulu for them. That was a good time.

The main purpose of the tent is that once my boy is a little older I would like to take my family and my truck to the US mainland every year to do a little overlanding.

Having an RTT would also be awesome in Hawaii especially Oahu because a lot of fishing spots on the side of the island I live on have very limited and bad terrain to camp on. I think a RTT would be a little easier to camp without a permit also. Hah

That's literally the other half of the reason. 1 part because it's cheap and replaceable, other part ...because it's my only option. Lol

I lost 100 miles per tank when I daily drove with a RTT on my Tacoma. I recommend taking it off when not in use. It can be done by a single person if you use your brain. My bf used to do it all the time and his truck is way taller than a Tacoma.

I’d suggest “Aerospace 303” instead of armorall on the cover. It’s primarily a UV protectant and works wonders on anything that will be in the sun nearly constantly. It’s what we put on whitewater rafts and kayaks, canoes, tents, etc.
