I know this has been asked a few times but looking for a definitive answer before purchases.

I’m looking at mounting the Thule Tepui Kukeman 3 RTT on top my 2022 Tacoma Double Cab with the Greenlane Off-road roof rack.
I want to mount to the roof rather than the bed to allow bed space for dirt bikes, bikes, paddleboards etc.

I know it is often recommended to mount to the bed but I really want to mount it to the cab. I’m not worried about fuel efficiency.

Is there any other reason I can’t do this?

    Any help appreciated!

I think noise, fuel economy and just general unsteady ride will deter you

With the exception of dirt bikes you can put the rest on the roof with the tent over the bed. That's how I had my 2nd gen setup for a while, with the tent on a bed rack that left it just slightly below the cab and then kayaks or bikes on the roof rack when I wanted them.

He's using dirt bikes, not bicycles. Otherwise that would work

That's why my reply to her said "with the exception of dirt bikes". The solution fits two of the three desired uses mentioned for the bed.

    The "R" stands for roof.

No reason why you can't do this.

I don't really understand tents on the bed for any reason other than fuel efficiency. You lose most of your bed if you actually use it for more than just a bit of gear.

The OEM Tacoma roof rack load capacity is about 100 lbs spread evenly. I got Victory 4X4 roof rack, https://www.victory4x4.com/product/VT23RK.html, and they say it can handle more in static weight. However given the weight of the Tepui, which is about 120 lbs, and then additional weight of a human, the stack weight will definitely go higher up and will affect the mounts in the roof. With the RTT on the roof, it can be a disaster: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMx232haRyo. Not a Toyota but you get the gist. Even if you are not buying a roof rack from
Rhino, you can always check the roof's dynamic load here: https://www.rhinorack.com/en-us/load-rating-calculator. Truthfully, I would get a trailer or a hitch mount for the dirt-bikes if I had them.

I am also considering the Tepui and for the bed rack I installed the Pro from KBVoodoo. they are solid. Can take 300 lbs dynamic and 800 static.
