Newbie looking into a RTT.. My leer cap is fiberglass and is not setup to hold the weight of an rtt.

Question is, has anyone put these tents on the cab roof of their Tacoma?

That's gonna require some real modification to support that weight.
the good news is your MPG should be around 5-7 mpg so you might want to add a second fuel tank but that's also gonna add a bunch of weight so you'll probably want to upgrade your suspension to take all that added weight.

Best option would be to sell the cap and get a smart cap they can hold the weight . Or you can do a bed rack with a tonneau cover . Putting a rtt on the roof is not recommended .

I have mine mounted to a mid-height bed rack, but a quick search for any roof rack will tell you the racks static + dynamic load ratings.

For example, Prinsu states theirs has a static load rating of over 1000lbs and dynamic of over 600lbs. That means it will hold 1000lbs safely standing still and 600 while driving. My Roofnest RTT weighs about 130lbs so would be no issue.

It’s more difficult to find actual Toyota verbiage on the ‘cabs’ rating but I assume (dangerous) based on prinsu’s ratings it is not a constraint, the constraint is the security of the roof rack & how it distributes weight.

it’ll make the truck a helluva lot taller and add the weight of the rack + the tent.

These numbers are examples of just 1 product but any reputable roof rack or even crossbars like Yakima will provide a static & dynamic load rating. Before I got my truck we had the RTT mounted on my wife’s Subaru forester with Yakima towers + cross bars and it was just fine.

Imagine the absurdity of putting a Roof Top Tent on your Roof Top.

I have seen it done but it would not be my first choice. I had boxes on my prinsu originally and you noticed the hell out of the weight up there. I personally wouldn't want a bed rack that put the tent over can height. I put mine on 6" bed bars and wouldn't want it any higher from a driving perspective. Especially if you ever deal with off camber situations.

My RTT weighs 125 lbs without my fat butt in it but goes up significantly when I’m in there plus add the wife and now you’re talking over 500 lbs!

If your leer topper has a roof rack, it shouldn't have any issue with a rooftop tent.

Is there a rectangle that's a bit thicker on the ceiling of your leer?

I believe my roof rack is rated for 300lbs, most others I saw was in the 250 range.
You should ask Leer about some stiffeners.

Thank you for all the responses / guidance. The link is helpful to look back on as well.

I would reply to the comments but I don’t know how to individually do that yet.

I have asked Leer about it’s rating and they mentioned that they would not recommend putting one on top + our body weight. (But I have not thought about stiffeners. Thanks for the tip.

OP- if the Leer didn’t have stiffeners installed during the fiberglass layup(original build at Leer factory), they cannot be added after sadly. They are bonded in between fiberglass layers to provide strength (usually a 6-8 ply addition to roof “load” area)
