Hey all, sorry if this is a dumb question but...I’ve never used a RTT before but now I’m looking into them because of how fast the setup and breakdown is. But I’m honestly nervous about the overhang. How can that support a lot of weight? They all look like a giant lever with nothing underneath. They look super sketch

The two halves have a hinge that connects them, the framing that connects them, and the ladder supporting the far end of the overhang.

Ohhh, the ladder acts as a support pole? Ok that makes sense

The cross bara do not need to be as wide as the rent. The mounting rails for the tents are about 2-3 feet apart from each other and could be moved (by drilling new holes) on most tents

I just like the idea of having the tent attatched to the truck.

Yeah, I really like the price point of the Smittybilt tent, at ~750 bucks.

I was looking at the Yakima Roof Top Tent from REI but the plan was to buy it during their anniversary sale. That planned turned me onto the Tepui tents though and with the sale from REI its 20% off the listed price. Just another option.

One more option, REI will get returns and store them until they hold their garage sale, it does not hurt to call and see if they have any RTT returns in stock. Tepui has returns on their website too.

Aren't all RTTs pretty much the same? What makes a $2500 or $3000 RTT so much better than one that costs $1000?

Current Setup is Eibach 620lbs Springs on Bilstein 5100's, Dakar leaf pack with Dirt King UCA's. Tires are 285 Wildpeak M/T on Method 701 wheels. RCI Sliders, Front Skid bed rack with Tuff Stuff Roof Top Tent, and US Offroad winch insert bumper with Smittybilt XRC 9.5k winch.
I believe they are, but of course no hard proof. I was reading a while back and it was said that they are pretty much all made on the same assembly line in Asia and at the end of the line they put a different label on it. It's not hard to believe considering that essentially everything is like that, that we buy. Which is how they get people to jump on the $2000+ soft shell tent... because of the brand name.

Now I am sure there are some companies that will use better material and what not. However, I am sure you could guarantee 80% of all tents if you REALLY trace them back to the plant are made the same way, same material, same place for varying price differences.
