I did lots of searching and can't find a single instance of an access cab with a roof top tent mounted on the roof. Just thought I'd check in here on Tacomaworld and see if anyone has seen it done. I need the box open to carry a quad on 1400km round trip hunting expeditions (plus off road miles).

My main concern is about roof strength. I've google searched and seen lots of instances of RTTs mounted on the roofs of small cars and even a few on mini coopers, for some reason. I've seen some mounted on jeep liberty roofs, and even some on 50 year old FJ40s. So surely this cab should be able to handle the weight. I've been up on my roof before with no issues at 170 lbs, except a dent I had to pop back out from beneath. I'm going to buy a canadian made RTT made by a company called Rocky Mountain Outdoor that weighs 97 pounds and is 48"x42" folded up. Should be about the right size. I'll figure something out for a rack, and if I need to reinforce the roof then I will. Not worried about aesthetics my 2009 is well beyond the days of being a pavement queen. If I can't make it work for some reason I can put it on my 4runner, but I don't want to have to take 2 trucks on these trips.

    Input, thoughts?

I'm pretty sure the lack of vertical pillars due to the suicide doors is the main reason why nobody runs it. I would hazard a guess that the roof is NOT strong enough to support that much weight, no matter how you reinforce.

I can appreciate your thoughts on the roof being less strong due to the missing B pillar, but I believe that it is because of the missing B pillar that toyota made the whole cage of the cab stronger on the access cabs than they are on the double cabs, to satisfy iihs and nhtsa crash test ratings. I've notice that when you get the truck twisted up crossing diagonal ditches in the access cab, the doors still open and close. On my double cab, the doors would fetch up due to the cab flexing and you couldn't open/close them. This led me to believe the cab was less rigid on the double cab.

This is all just theory though of course...

I'll post pics when I am home. Plenty strong enough for a tent

At least for my girlfriend and I in a CVT Mt. Cayley. It's one of the smallest.

That looks just about perfect for what I'm looking for, any details on how you mounted it?

It's just on a roof rack like all models. I bought a Prinsu roof rack.

Ok, makes sense, that happens to be the only roof rack available for the Access Cab, thanks.

Bringing this thread back from the grave. I reached out to Victory 4x4 to see what the weight roof rack will support

Confirmed it will hold a RTT and two people just fine.
