When applying RTV sealant on the mating surface of the timing chain cover (1GR-FE), is it best to apply the bead on the side of the cover itself, on the block, or both? I am using gray around the water pump inlefts and Permatex The Right Stuff black everywhere else. The manual says use gray everywhere but I've been advised here to use black due to its superior oil resistance.

On the cover, definitely not both that will be way too much RTV.

^This (which is what the FSM states).

Not sure what manual you're referring to, but the FSM specifically says to use two different sealants for the oil and coolant parts.

What these guys said. Applying RTV to large removable items makes more sense than applying it to the base surfaces simply due to the fact that there is less room for sloppy installation and getting it everywhere. So yes, put it on the cover only.

Makes sense -- it is much easier to apply that on the block
