I recently had my truck at the dealer for the PCS recall, then took the truck on a long trip. At a rest stop, I popped the hood to check the fluid levels and noticed the clutch fluid reservoir had overflowed. I suspect the greasemonkeys at the dealer topped off the reservoir for no good reason and it overflowed after the heat of a long drive.

But the big question is, I found a large rubber lozenge floating in the clutch fluid (see pics). About the size and shape of a Mentos candy. It's loose in there, just floating around. What the heck is this? Also, the clutch fluid appears to have small pale specks dispersed throughout. Definitely wasn't like that last time I checked it. About 18k miles on the truck.

Any thoughts on the cloudy/chunky fluid and the strange rubber floating piece?

Dot 5 is silicone based and purple. It is not compatible with Dot 3/4/5.1.

Dot 5.1 is backwards compatible to 4 and 3, and is clear.

Pretty sure my brake fluid (same stuff) isn't cloudy like you see in the picture of my clutch reservoir.

Is the floaty compressible? If so, is it to manage over pressure?

It feels like solid rubber. Also, the cap itself is molded rubber -- it fits over the reservoir lip but doesn't snap down tightly, and there's a vent hole in the top. I don't see how any real pressure could be contained in the reservoir with that arrangement.

Really curious why the fluid isn't clear (it is when it's fresh out of the can).

Used as a visibility aid for seeing fluid level?

Every Toyota model uses DOT 3 brake and clutch fluid, except the A90 Supra which uses DOT 4. No reason for a dealer tech to have DOT 5 on hand.

@BearWithMe I suspect cloudy fluid is due to contamination. Maybe the dealer (or you, previously!) left the cap open for too long while working under the hood. It's relatively easy to suck out the fluid with a turkey baster and pour in some fresh fluid.

If so, I do not think it is working anymore. I plan to take the truck to the dealer tomorrow to see if they'll flush the fluid and to complain about the overfilling.
