I went wheeling last weekend (Broken Arrow in Sedona) and my driver's side tire hit the frame at least once under compression+turn. I didn't think that was possible with 31's...I was pushing the truck pretty well, but still. Stock wheels.

Would Tundra wheels and 285/75R16's clear the frame if I went with a 1.25" Spidertrax spacer, or would that then hit fenders? I'd prefer to avoid spacers entirely, but I may have found a set of wheels with (used) 265/75R16 BFG AT's for $150, so Tundra wheels are a possibility.

Maybe I should wait and pick up an aftermarket set of 16x8's with 3.5" BS...thoughts?

If you suspect you're rubbing with 31's, why are you considering moving up to even bigger tires?
I'd address why you're rubbing with stock size first

31x10.5 is the stock tire size so it seems really strange that you had rubbing issues. I would be more concerned about upgrading some suspension parts before worrying about new/different tires/wheels. If you have rubbing its probably because something in the suspension is worn out or broken causing parts to either bottom out or overextend

I don't think 31x10.50 is the stock tire size but I don't have any supporting proof other than I put 31x10.50s on mine and they definitely had a noticeable unmounted larger outer diameter sitting next to the old ones. Probably at least an inch taller.

However, to your point I do agree that aging coils can definitely cause enough front end sag to make the tires rub.

I am running Goodyear Wrangler Authority M/T 31x10.50 on my truck and they rub slightly on the passenger front at full lock when compressed. I have a new OME full setup on the way in the mail though to fix that issue :D

I would try to avoid wheel spacers at all cost because of the added leverage from the offset to your control arms. The wider your stance is, the more strain it puts on components. A good illustration is to try and lift a dumbell close to your body, and then try to lift it with your arm sticking straight out.

265/75R15 and 31x10.5R15 are stock tire sizes for 1st gens

I rubbed slightly with a set of firestone m/ts. Compared to my Michelin road tires now the m/ts were slightly bigger. Even though both are a 31x10.50x15. I have been told different manufactures make different size tires even though they are marked the same size.

    I stand corrected.

evidently my truck got the short end of the stick on that option.

the aftermarket wheels have more bs than your current ones, buy an inch, so they will stick out an inch farther, this no frame rub

I have bump stops. Not sure how worn out suspension would cause this unless you lift to clear larger tires and then never wheel your truck. I have about an inch of lift on Toytec coilovers. It's certainly not bad rubbing but if I came down off a rock with the wheel turned the tire rubbed the frame. Unless I'm seeing old scrub marks and was hearing something else.

Valid point on the bump stops, but then again its possible to be at full flex on the bump stop and not rub sometimes, and rub other times depending on which way the wheels are turned.

I have a 1" body lift and 31x10.50's rub vary rarely but it has happened.

Offset affects clearance just as much as backspacing does alot of people don't look for that. If your wheel has a +1 offset and 4.5" backspacing, it's the same tire clearance from frame as a +0 offset and a 3.5" backspacing. Look for a zero or negative offset wheel with 4.5" backspacing and that should eliminate your need for wheel spacers.

0 offset at 4.5" BS is stock, no? That's what I have now. I was going to run Tundra wheels and 33's, but if I'm running into (minor) problems now that might not be a great idea.

I don't think a body lift would be related to this problem, as that only lifts the body of the truck - suspension and frame remain the same. I had 33x10.50's on my old truck and they rubbed at full lock without compression, but I did really minor offroad stuff so it didn't matter. Now, I might run into problems. :p

Well to answer your first question I think 0 offset @ 4.5" backspace is stock yes. I have no clue what the Tundra wheel specs are which is why I posted the chart so you could figure that part out. Also make sure the calipers will clear the wheel.

The body lift helped my tires to stop rubbing the pinch weld which I thought was frame rubbing at first.

I think you will be fine even if there is rubbing it surely wont be a huge amount just keep an eye on it.

The Tundra 16's will clear (they clear the Tundra brakes too, which is actually why I want a 16" wheel) and they have the same specs as the Tacoma wheels, I believe.

It's not bad rubbing - I was just surprised. It either happened on Devil's Staircase, or some other rock somewhere... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghCLSdozaX8

    But yeah:
