Are you talking about the scuffs by the largest non-threaded hole? If so, that's perfectly normal. It's the front "pin" (for lack of a better term) that locks the front of your magazine into place. Receiver soft alloy, the other part is steel.

does anyone else have a problem with the crap coating on the receiver peeling off?

Mine is peeling very badly, I'm close to dismantling it and stripping the coating off, has anyone done that?

this isn't mine, but like this

    mine actually is worse.

ya, i have been doing some research on the issue, apparently it is a problem with some of the "stainless" 10/22s. aluminum receiver and silver paint. If I strip it, I will post pictures of the process for everyone on here if they are having the same issue.

Older 10/22s were anodized, either black (blued) or silver (stainless). Like every one else, Ruger as cheapened up there process and started painting them, hell, the newest guns have plastic trigger guards and barrel bands. You can bead blast that receiver and it will look like new, however, if you don't seal it with some type of clear, it will oxidize and "yellow" up fairly quickly. Some folks polish to mirror shine. Take a peak over on rimfirecentrel.com to see examples.

Can you powder coat the barrel? Or would that be bad?

Nice. I was thinking about checking a party store to see if they sell small bottles of helium and balloons. We could tie them all over the place as targets

Not sure about this, if you could keep it out of the bore should be fine.

I've always used saltine or animal crackers, good and reactive, with no mess to clean up.

there is a thread on rimfirecentral that shows how to remove all that and clean it up. I think he uses aircraft stripper.

i know this is where the picture is from but did you read the thread?
