Yep some time after the light comes on. Have no real interest in visiting gas stations gives me plenty of miles to find the cheapest.

I usually fill up around 1/2 a tank, or I'll top it off no matter what if there is some sort of storm system coming this way(hurricane, nor'easter, snowstorm). Also because prices always seem to go up right before those "events", so I fill up prior to that happening. Being in the Fire Dept, I can't be without means to get to the station(or go home). We have about 40-50 gallons in my garage in a gas caddy for the lawn mower, generator, snow blower etc.

I get 350-400 miles per tank so half tank can take me 200 miles. I'm in the willy wags but there is a general store 4 miles away and a rural town with a couple maybe 10 away It takes gas to haul gas!

I have a gas can full, strapped down in a plastic crate in my bed.

it's not an issue. i believe the proper rule is

"never have a loose cheapo gas can with no cap bouncing around in the truck cab or bed"

mine isn't going anywhere or leaking. truck could probably flip and the can will stay where it is.

how am I supposed to get anywhere without a gas can. LoL short bed dblcab 4x4 6spd with a 17gal tank. my range is like 240 miles and NEVER GO OVERLAND without a full spare gas can. I'm just saying

I fill up when the tank is almost completely empty.
You guys topping off after you've burned a quarter of a tank must love gas stations because you're going there 4 times more often than necessary.

Plus if you have any kind of fuel points reward system you want to be buying all your gas all at once to maximize the discount.

Yesterday, in line at Country Fair convenience store the cashier spoke, over the intercom and "told a guy at the pump to take the gas tanks out of his completely open pickup bed and place them on the ground to fill for safety."

Interesting, Thank you. But then, all vehicles have rubber tires which don't allow a path to dissipate static...

"In recent incidents reported to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), fires spontaneously ignited when workers or others attempted to fill portable gasoline containers (gas cans) in the backs of pickup trucks equipped with plastic bed liners or in cars with carpeted surfaces."

My understanding is that vehicles are generally “grounded” through their electronics and battery system.

Where do you live? I've never encountered this. Are you sure it's not you card that limits the amount?

That's pretty common request. Frankly I kind of think it's safer for it to stay put than to slide it across a plastic bed! My plastic gas can weights about 50 lb full, little hefty to sling over the side of a pickup! So far no one has suggested putting it on the ground maybe they don't care out here in the boonies.

This is pretty common in the states. It's the bane of HD diesel owners and a reason why they carry around multiple credit cards just to fill up their tanks.

Well you know there’s a 50 year study on this issue and a 5000 page report. Lol
But, I have seen static build up in the bed. Doesn’t hurt to put them on the ground.

It is the voltage potential there is no earth ground on a vehicle. Air craft tankers use clips that attach to the air craft to make them the same voltage potential. No arcs and sparks

There is a ground while you're touching it...

Gas cans should always be placed on the ground to fill them. Common knowledge. It's also plastered on warning labels all over every pump in the country.

It's also against the law to fill them in the vehicle...

Interesting. I just did some quick googling. I've never come across this in any states I've been in recently. It seems it's Visa and Mastercard that limit the purchase to $100 (looks like $125 recently though) and I may have avoided this because my Canadian credit card will pre-authorize for $250.

Pump gas bear foot? Ever get zapped in dry weather walking across a carpeted floor? The pumps are well grounded.

I got gas last week (not like that). They only had 91 at the pumps. People in the middle of nowhere, who like to wait till their gas light is on, may not like the random options they encounter.
We have even had brief fuel outages.
