Worse thing guitar players try to do is buy one guitar to make it sound like another. If you want a Les Paul sounding guitar....buy a Les Paul!

With stock tacoma e-locker, 37" is the absolute max tire size I would run. At that point you are pushing the limits of both the differential and axle shafts.

Lot of people running 37"s with big ass 1 ton axles. You might lose some clearance, but who cares? Pick different lines or drag your axles over the obstacles, LOL. They ain't gonna break haha

But remember, you can build 1 ton axles on a smaller package if you go the custom axle route. That's more money, but it is the best of both worlds as you get 1 ton brutal strength in a smaller and lighter overall package. that's where 609 axles come into play [dana 60 outers in a custom housing with a Ford 9" third member and custom shafts]

    Hahahah LOL!! That's a good one :D

Yea, front axle alone for a 609 can get set you back $7,000-$9,000 easily, and that's for your average joe build. Of course, there are always ways to cut corners here and there, but it ain't gonna be cheap no matter what.

Wanna go Ultra 4 style? Very common for those guys to have tens of thousands of dollars in those custom 609 axles.

    Sad day today...

Driving to Nebraska to say goodbye to one of my dogs. She was one of my buddies through my divorce and the rough days afterward.

    Losing pets is rough...

    Thanks, guys. I appreciate it.

She went downhill fast. She was in pretty rough shape and was getting up there in years, so it was the right thing to do. I'm just really glad I got to be there to say goodbye and send her off.

We gave her a good home and a good life, and I'm happy about that, even though I miss her.

Well after a rough couple of weeks that saw me saying goodbye to one of my dogs and then losing my grandmother, I've managed to pick myself back up and get back to life. Thankfully, I have really great people in my life and they definitely helped me get through a pretty rough stretch.

Anyway, this weekend was absolutely gorgeous here on the Front Range, and I was able to get a couple things done to the truck. It isn't much, but it's progress, and I'll take that!

Firewall Tubbing for 35s - Sealing and Finishing

This weekend I finished up the sealing and paint on the interior driver side tub. It was kind of a pain in the ass to get to the welds and get them cleaned up, but I think I did a pretty decent job.

After some grinding and wire wheel work, I hit the sheet metal with an orbital sander and some 150 grit paper. Good enough to get most of the surface rust off and also give the metal a bit of 'tooth' for better adhesion. I then applied Naval Jelly rust remover over the welds and the tub. Clean up involved water, and I was super careful to not go too crazy and potentially trap water in any spaces that would then get covered with seam sealer.

I hit everything with some air pressure to try to blow out and dry any residual moisture. Then I sprayed and wiped everything with acetone, followed by more air pressure to be certain it was all gone.

It was at this point that I made a calculated gamble: I sprayed the entire tub area with self-etching primer before I applied the seam sealer. I trust the chemical etch process in the primer to promote good adhesion for both the primer itself and the seam seal.

    IMG_3486.jpg
Self-etching primer applied after cleaning the entire area.

After three coats, I let the truck sit overnight. Then the next day I started laying down seam seal.

At first, I went very slow and forced sealer into all of the irregularities along the welds. Then after letting that sit for an hour, I came back and laid down a thicker bead over the welds. Finally, I smeared a bead by hand across the first two and onto the sheet metal to make sure that I had good coverage. It ain't pretty, but it should work.

    IMG_3488.jpg
    Three coats of seam sealer.

Finally, after letting the last coat of sealer dry for three hours, I hit the entire area again with primer. I considered spraying white paint, but the factory finish under the sound deadener is gray primer as well. I think I'll roll with that. None of this is visible anyway.

    IMG_3490.jpg
Moar primer. Three coats and done.

At this point, I need to secure the wiring harness and 4WD ECU, trim and mount the kick panel, and slap the door trim back on. Then the interior will be done!
