I ended up buying the one that @Timmah! used in his how-to vid. Wasn’t cheap, but I’m happy to turn OT funds into tools if it’s worth it. It worked like a champ, and I’m already loving the 20T press I got from HF on sale. I figure that if I fucked up an axle once I can do it again, and if not, I can help some local folks with their bearing swaps. Also, I’m a filthy tool junkie, so any excuse to buy tools is taken advantage of.

Sadly, the funds that paid for new axles, bearings and tools was supposed to fund a Hobart Handler 210 MVP... But that’s coming soon once I save up for a bit!

Well, tonight was kind of a bummer.

Turns out the Yukon shafts that we’re advertised to fit 95-04 Tacomas do not work with the stock bearings for my 2002. Where the stock shafts have a radius that matches a radiused lip on the bearing, the Yukons have a hard right angle step. Turns out Brett @Squeaky Penguin ran into the same thing tonight (because I suggested the Yukons to him).

After some searching and some investigation, it appears that the 95-00 bearings do not have the problematic lip feature present on the inner race like the 01+ bearings do, but are otherwise exactly the same. So off to Amazon I went and found these:

Genuine Toyota 90363-40020-77 Radial Ball Bearing https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GKHEV5W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_sGeZAbS4YN7QD

I’ll have to press off the other bearing and the outer retainer (again), but whatever. I just want this to go together and get the truck back on her feet again.

Hey @Squeaky Penguin and @thefatkid , how big of an issue it it to have whatever the stuff is that is captured between the axle shaft and the lug studs present? I think it’s the drum brake oil shield or some shit?

I may have gotten ahead of myself and pressed in my studs without all of that...

Which part are you talking about? Not sure I follow.

Also, called LROR this morning, and discussed the situation. Sent them pictures of the differences and my Napa receipt to get the correct bearings. They said they would work with me on the cost for getting the correct bearings - waiting to hear back.

I protects the seal a little, more important though, it is supposed to keep the gear oil off the brake shoes in the event of an axle seal failure.

See Brian’s response below. It’s the shield that is captured between the 3rd member side of the axle shaft and the lug studs.

That’s good news. I think I’ll do the same, as I’m now $150ish into new bearings.

    Thanks, Brian. Much appreciated!

Is it worth pressing off the studs on the new axle, getting the shields off the old one and then pressing it all back on the new shaft?

Seems like it does a piss poor job at that if that's the case. Though typically we don't know there was an axle seal failure until the entire tire is coated with the shit anyway.

@Squeaky Penguin , I talked to LROR today as well and mentioned the issues we're both having. They said to let them know if this approach works and that they’ll work with me since I had to buy different bearings. I also pointed out that the crux of the issue is that the Yukon axles are advertised for 95-04, when in fact they’re built for 95-00. Hopefully they call Yukon on that so someone else doesn’t get bit like we did.

That said, it would also be pretty awesome if we were able to show what’s required to make it all work on the Gen 1.5 trucks. For someone who isn’t going tons and 42s, or LT and a 9 inch, it might be a nice little bump in capability, despite the 8” ring gear.
