If you ever make it out this way to hit Moab or whatever, there are plenty or breweries to check out. Longmont itself has at least a dozen!

Last weekend I finally got around to swapping out my leaf spring and shackle bushings for some greasable units. It was pretty straightforward. I didn’t take any pics of the work because I was trying to get done before a wheeling trip with my buddy the next day, but I did take a picture of this... My jack stand bit my hand pretty good, and I got a nice bruise/cut. Good times!

    A9A5A0BF-9C4A-4BED-BC90-B757B932E492.jpg

After the swap, I noticed a huge difference in noise right off the bat, but I’m still getting some squeaking that sounds more like metal on metal. Pretty sure it’s the leaf pack and not the bushings. When I (finally) get around to relocating my shocks, I’ll have to break down the pack anyway. I’ll re-arch the driver side a bit and then clean everything up, hit the spring surfaces with some dry moly lube, then reassemble and repaint the pack. Hopefully that helps.

    ——

The wheeling trip was super fun, and you can see my weak write-up here. The weather was good, the trails were awesome with some challenging spots mixed in here and there, and there was pretty minimal traffic.

Yeah, I’m sure it’s completely different in the spring. Still pretty fun to cross!

Just noticed that my passenger side LBJ is starting to lose grease. Guess I’ll be replacing those sooner rather than later...

A little seeping is normal. If it gets real bad replace it. Unless it has play then replace asap.

For me it depends on how many miles are on them. If they is approaching 90K, I wouldn't mess around. Replace them, regardless of any play in them.

If they are still 40-50K and no play, I might be willing to play a wait-and-see game depending on how much play you find in them.

I recently replaced both my upper and lower balljoints. Both had a pretty good amount of play in them. It's definitely worth replacing them if you have any sort of play. Might as well just not even risk failure out on the trail, let alone at 70mph on the highway.

Yep. I’ve looked into their prices, but so far McGeorge Toyota is the winner when you include shipping. I’ll most likely add oTREs and cam hardware while I’m at it.
Thanks, gents! I’m gonna try to check for play this week when I have some time.
    Exactly, Cory.

I’ve seen the failure pics, and they’re gruesome enough when they happen at low speed. A high speed failure is likely a totaled truck at best and hospital time or death at worst. Not worth fucking around with at all.

The whole front end minus coilovers is likely getting refreshed soon. Too many critical components in too many critical systems...

Really. I usually buy two and get the free shipping. But I’m going to look into McGeorge next time

I just finished quoting LBJs, OTREs, and cam hardware from three different places and here’s what I found out:

    McGeorge Toyota:
    $435 parts
    $30 shipping
    $465 TOTAL

    Conicelli Toyota:
    $460 parts
    $25 shipping
    $485 TOTAL

    Camelback Toyota:
    $475 parts
    Free shipping
    $475 TOTAL

They’re all about the same in terms of total cost, so maybe Camelback rolls their shipping into their parts prices to recoup the ‘free’ shipping. Also, I haven’t tried to see if Gunny still does a discount through them, so maybe they would come out ahead after that. And Camelback is in AZ, whereas the other guys are east coast, so shipping times would be less for us here in Colorado, so that might be a factor as well.

You know Jim Yoda sells oem cams for I think 10.00 a set. @Squeaky Penguin got a set and can confirm cost.

Edit I don’t know if that helps or not. Or worth your time.

I think they were $5 per set. He had a whole shed full of them too.

I did have two come out without cutting as well, so you may not need all four.

Thanks, gents! I’ll look into that for sure.

Was that the cams, plates, AND bolts? I might just go with new OEM bolts because they’re pretty cheap and get the rest from Jim’s.
