When was the last time you replaced your steering rack? I know new OEM racks come with ITE

It’s the original, but I’ve only got 75k on it. I’m going to replace the rack bushings with ES poly bushings and see how that goes.

I’m thinking about getting the 555 inners since they seem fairly well regarded on here and they’re not as speedy as OEM. I think you’re running those, aren’t you?

I think @Reh5108 was getting some play in his 555 inners, but then again, he breaks nearly everything on his pile. :luvya:

If your OEM ones don't have play, I would leave them, as they are much better.

Ryan’s shit breaks because he sends it!

Good call on the inners. I was going to check them anyway. I’m hoping that the new poly rack bushings and outers do the trick since the rack has low miles and hasn’t really been abused. I’ll know soon.

    You're running 35's right?
Anything less than OEM on the front end will fail quickly.
The poly bushings are worth the time to put in. I installed a set on the Tundra the 2nd week i owned it.

Nope I was going to until I didn't have a big enough wrench to un-bolt them from the rack. Then I learned a new steering rack came with OEM inners and since my rack was clicking when I turned at slow speeds I figured I just hold out and replace the entire setup. Hopefully sometime this month

Thanks, Brett. That’s a really good point.

The hope is that the play that Brian @thefatkid noticed during the alignment was just the old OEM rubber rack bushings. Mileage wise, the rack and inners only have 75k on them, and maybe 15k of that is after 35s. And it’s not like she’s seen a lot of hard off road miles either.
That’s what I’d rather do. From what I hear, the original racks on these are usually hanging in there well past 200k, and most of them are running the original inners as well.

They are Moog. I actually found that the tie rod came loose and that is where my play was coming from but since I was that far and had an OEM on hand I put it in and the Moog is now a spare.

I agree with this. Inner's usually aren't the fucked one's anyway. Can easily check while you do the bushings.

My OEM bushings were shot after 5k miles on the new rack. I was pissed I didn't do it when I put the new rack in.

This is what I’m hoping for. I’m pretty sure the rack and inners are fine, but I’ll be checking the inners for sure to be certain.

I keep hearing that. I’m not looking forward to the job, but it’ll be worth it. I’m gonna do the tack weld mod as well, so when it’s all done, shit should be tight.

If you do have some play in the rack you can tighten up the guide bushing. I did this on my cvj rack and it eliminated the play I had. The locking nut was actually loose so I assume it backed out a bit and I hadn't actually started to wear the bushing in less than a year but maybe I did.
