I didn't change anything so it was a few minutes to pull the CO and bump it out. I have an extra set of bump stops that I cut down so I bumped even higher than most so if/when they compress I would have room. I also fit up with used tires that are at 40%ish and wanted room for when I get new tires.

Dammit. Just now getting home from work, and I'm freaking smoked. Not to sound like a whiny bitch, but I'm really looking forward to working more normal hours at some point. Especially when I have so much that I need to do to get this thing where I want it.

But enough of that. It is what it is. Gotta work around it.

Seems like this build has a great direction! Excited to see where it goes. How do you like the short throw shifter?

Thanks for checking it out! I'm hoping to get things rolling soon, if work would cooperate.

I love the short throw shifter. Super easy to install, and a big improvement over stock. The shift feels much more 'positive', if that makes sense.

Since my job seems to be conspiring against me when it comes to time to work on the truck, I figured I'd follow up with you guys on the tubbing issue.

So, is the takeaway that mounting up the 315s in the front on the stock suspension is the way to go because that will be the worst case in terms of rub? (What's your name, btw, @cynicalrider? I like handles as much as the next guy, but we're all friends here, right? :D).

And Tim, do you mind expanding on why it was better to gauge the rubbing with worn tires? The use of cut down bumps makes sense, I just want to understand the worn tire aspect. FWIW, I'm gonna run Super Bumps in the rear position on the LCA eventually, but I figured I could tub based on the stock ones; maybe even cut them down like you did.

I guess the bottom line is: Do I need to tub FIRST, before UCAs, coilovers, and leaf springs?

Thanks again for the input, fellas! This is exactly the kind of stuff I was hoping for with my build thread.

Nice! Another fellow Taco guy from up north here!

Haha my name is Mike, and that's the whole thing about removing the coilover. Stock suspension or not won't matter. When you pull the coilover you take suspension out of the equation and thats really what you want. With no coil in you can see how far the tire wants to stuff into your firewall and cut accordingly.

This is what you want it to look like after you tub:

    https://youtu.be/xNHzpx78x9A

In the video there is no coilover in, the jack has jacked the LCA up as far as it can go to the point that the bump stops are full compressed and the truck is being lifted (full stuff), and the tire isn't hitting anything.

    Thanks, Mike!

Yep, so it sounds like I do want to tub first, which is totally fine! Then when everything else is done, I can actually go wheel this thing!

I believe you used worn tires like Tim did. Was there a motivation behind that. For some reason, my rookie mind can't work that out. Doesn't really matter, since I'll have to use my new ones anyway, just curious.

Did you get a good deal on your Maxxs, btw?

I still have the cut bumps I used if you want to borrow them and not have to cut your set.

I got my tires used for cheap so that's what I had to work with. Plus they won't last forever and don't want to pound the firewall in later for new (larger) tires.

You are most definitely better off using your new tires. I had a 35 that I borrowed from a friend. Actual tire sizes can vary per manufacturer so using exactly what you will run is the best thing you can do.

    Thanks, guys!

Yeah, it seems like a new tire on the stock suspension, minus the coilover would give me the worst case rubbing.

And yes, if you still have those cut down bumps, @TimF, I'd like to use those to get some margin as well. Let me know what time and location works best for you. I'd like to get started as soon as possible.

Also, based on Monte's input, and Brett and and Mike's experience, I might want to start thinking about getting some Spidertrax 1.25" spacers. I'll wait and see how the F5s do first, tho.

I'm running 3.25" BS and just barely rubbing the frame at full lock with 295s.

You might consider getting .75" wheel spacers though. Bora seems to have a good reputation as well. It's a tough balance between rubbing the frame with less BS, or rubbing the firewall with more. People seem to forget the tire gets pushed closer to the firewall while turning with greater BS.

It's exactly the opposite for the UCAs. To add caster, they move the top of the spindle back, pushing the tire closer to the firewall. Adding caster at the LCA cams does push the tire further away.

Yeah, I know that there's a tradeoff there with back spacing, but that's good to know about the UCAs, Brett. So would it add any value to pull the stock UCAs and coilovers, install the new UCAs without the new coilovers, and then do the tubbing?

I thought that the point of aftermarket UCA's was to be able to get the positive caster you normally couldn't with stock UCA's?

There would be some being the tire would be closer to the firewall with the new UCAs. Really, I haven't tubbed so I'm not sure, but I would say take out as much as you need, and then go a little further, and you'll be fine. :D

They do add caster, by moving the top of the spindle towards the firewall. Not all caster is created equal.
