I recently got some running boards for my 06 tacoma and when installing on the passenger side the threads (that were capped off by plastic covers i removed) were just rusted terribly. Probably 4/6 threads along the frame i cannot get a bolt into just by itself. Should i try to to use a thread tap or anything else (pb + wire brush, etc) or just abandon the project and return the running boards?

You can run a drill through the holes to open them up first.

Also, just a tip, if it's on a tiny difference in size, throw the bolts in the freezer then try putting them in.
