So a little back story… January 24 I set off for Arkansas from northern KY. I spent the night in Leitchfield, Ky. Early in the morning on the 25th I left hotel, truck ran fine without issues. Ran through a drive thru for breakfast then filled up with gas. I got on western Kentucky parkway and within 2 times the truck started running like garbage! Lost power and CEL came on. Pulled over for a minute to make sure there wasn’t anything super obvious. I limped it to the next exit and found an Autozone to scan the codes since I left mine scan tool at home. The codes were as I expected. Random misfire code, cylinder 3,4,5,6 misfire codes. System lean codes and a couple other codes also. Skip the middle part about getting the truck back home… I disconnected the lines under the cab of the truck and ran the fuel pump in the tank till the tank was empty but I kept a sample. I have the sample sitting in a sealed glass jar at work and will be sending it off on Monday to have it test. My service manager, many of my colleagues and myself all agree it’s 100% not gasoline, but also doesn’t seem like water. We all think that it’s E85. The station I filled up at doesn’t even have an option for E85.

Like I said I drain the tank almost completely dry. I put 10 gallons of 93 octane and some fuel system cleaner back in and replaced my spark plugs. The truck does start, run and drive. However it idles like complete ass once it warms up and switches from short term fuel trim to long term fuel trim.

If in fact it was E85 like we suspect, what all will this effect and what else could potentially be my running issue?

    Current codes are
P017100: system to lean bank 1
    P117000: Fuel performance/port injector
    P017400:system to lean bank 2
    P160600: rough idle
    P030000: random multiple misfire
P030027: Random Multiple Misfire Detected (Emission) signal Rate

Since you are home safe, you may consider a title change to reserve for those who are actually stranded and in need.
The technical part is above me, sorry and GL

I think you may have answered your own question. You “drained the tank ALMOST completely dry”. If it was in fact e85 there’s still some there. When it’s all gone then your problem will be too if in fact it was the cause.

I think the only way to drain it completely is to remove the tank, which I can do but Lord knows I don’t want to.

when you filled it up did you over fill it by continuing to fill it after the nozzle shut off to top it off?
    that will do it!

No. I don’t top off. I mean if the pump stops at $37.89 I’ll go to $38.00. But I never go more than 10-15 cents.

Unfortunately this is correct. You've only diluted it, not removed it. So it's either deal with the pita work, or live with the codes and problems in the mean time, while hoping it's not leading to an expensive repair. The question you need answered is are those codes telling you your engine is being harmed or is it ok to continue adding fuel to dilute and drive until this is resolved. I can't answer that.

I guess I should add, when I say the tank was almost completely dry(empty) I mean there was less than a gallon left. I guess that’s still enough to make it run like ass even with 10 gallons of 93 octane.

I started it up this morning (2/4/24) and it ran okay… for about 5 seconds then began to misfire pretty bad and the CEL was flashing, which I know mean it’s a catalyst damaging misfire. It’s not flashed until this morning. I shut it off but have not re-ran the codes. I believe I’m going to take it to Toyota, have them work up a quote and then contact a small claims attorney that I know and make the gas station company pay for it.

It is not a gas issue, it is a fuel delivery issue or unmetered air.
Did you check obvious items like intake, maf, etc?
Are you on the fuel pump recall list?

    Yeah.
Finding and filling with some non-ethanol would have been preferred, but even with e10 your ratio should be fine if you dilute whatever was left with 15-20 gallons of fuel. Maybe not great, but not enough ethanol left to cause major issues. I think your problem lies elsewhere. Check your grounds.

    2023 tacoma sr5 4x4 , lifted with Bilstein 6112 front and 5100 rear. add a leaf
clamp your purge valve hose going to your intake manifold and see the idle go back to normal. its sounds like the purge Valve is going out.

Recall was done a year ago. There was no previous issues UNIT I filled up with bad gas. I’m mostly asking if bad gas/e85 will have ruined injectors and or fuel pump(s).

Not true. 10 cents with of fuel is not enough to spill into the canister

Thanks for the input. I highly doubt this is a ground issue since I had zero running/idling issues until I filled up with bad gas.

    Yeah.
Makes sense, but running a gallon or 2 of e85 on accident shouldn't ruin anything, it just won't run very well.

I filled up from 1/4 tank with it. The station I filled up at doesn’t even offer e85. I’m not 100% sure yet that’s what it was. I’m sending the sample out tomorrow to have tested.

I haven’t watched the live data. This morning though it didn’t matter. It ran like crap 5 seconds after engine on
