I just purchased a Tacoma from 2006. I was aware of rust problems with these years. At first it seemed fine but of after some more investigating I found what seems like pretty bad damage. It only seems to be in one spot and the rest of the frame seems okay but need second opinions. What can/should I do. Has anyone tried frame repair kits?

That’s really bad. The laminated area that’s flaking in the third photo means it’s spread beyond the area with the holes.

That would have qualified for a frame replacement back in the day.

Small lift, slightly oversized tires, well...
While the 2nd pic looks bad, the third looks worse, to me. I would say fixable, but it's not going to be the easiest repair.

First and Second pic is nothing, you can wire brush all the loose shit, then hit it with the POR-15 kit to stop that current rust from spreading.... Then a couple weeks later I would Fluid Film it myself, if not find a local place that does it 24/7/365. For about $130 bucks that'll do the whole truck. But.... Photo number three is more than Terminal. You can clearly see the metal that's been ate away. That's a definite indication that what you can see on the outside of the boxed frame is bad, it's 3x worse on the inside. You might be able to find a local metal shop and see what they say, but it's looking like a frame replacement may be needed, more than just the sub frame from the pics. Sorry OP.

You’re right. I meant third photo in my post. It’s been edited.

Screwdriver would go right through that spot next to the cat in the second pic
Hell, a finger might go through. I suspect there are more bad spots

Here are some more photos. The spot in the original is only in one spot and in one side.

Also everywhere else feels very solid apart from the spot people are mentioning. Any chance I could replace this section?

Safe-t-cap makes all of those sections. You need a qualified welder, which isn't cheap, but a few thousand more spent there makes all the difference in the longevity of the repair. I've seen a lot worse frames being fixed.

Not worth dumping more money into this, especially for a 2WD.
