I need to do some touch up around my trailer hitch opening as I have a little bit of rust showing. I’ve used my Tacoma to pull trailer a few times this last year. Besides using a steel brush to get it clean what are the suggestions for type of black paint I should use out of a shaker can?

There's no use touching that area up. It’ll come right back the next time your hitch is inserted. That area isn’t going to rust out. If it bothers you, put a hitch plug in to hide it when you’re not towing.

On the outside of the hitch I'd use something like POR15, then topcoat with Rustoleum or Krylon.

On the inside of the hitch, if you use it regularly, paint will just come off, so grease works well. Or put a plug on the receiver.

More importantly, how are you protecting your frame there in salt country?

Grease the hitch tube and ball and then bitch about it every time you forget and grab it barehanded. Unless I'm the only idiot that constantly does it.

I hosed down the inside of my hitch with fluid film every year. In MN, if you leave a hitch in over winter its probably not coming out in the spring, so fluid film and a cap unless I actually need to tow.

I'll one up you. I'm the dumb bastard that has ruined at least three pairs of khakis from walking into the greased ball in the short time between removing the shin-saver cover and hitching the trailer.
