Rust has eaten my exhaust flanges

I have the same flange issue,
The local garage told me that there is a flange repair kit for them,
Dropping it off tomorrow,was told that it will be a couple of hundred for them to fix it. I’m lazy and sounds good to me.

 

Sounds like you're getting ripped off. I've had whole catbacks installed for $300 on other cars. If you're lazy and rich, then I guess it doesn't matter.

I'm having the same issue with a rusty flange that I have a check engine light comes on and off. Looking at the condition of this does it seem that this will clean up and new gasket & hardware can be installed or is chopping it and using exhaust clamp like discussed here work better? Thanks for the help guys.

 

I would see if the exhaust shop has flanges that can replace those. That's assuming your exhaust pipes are still in good shape. Sometimes, rust will keep the form until it's touched and then it crumbles apart. With the original post, his flanges were completely gone, so I didn't suggest getting new flanges put on because it's likely at least part of his pipe would need to be replaced too. Yours doesn't look as bad, but those flanges are done and need to be replaced. I would ask them to inspect the pipe to see if it can still be saved. If not, you could have a new section welded in place, provided you understand that replacing part of the exhaust later will mean cutting the pipe again.

 

I'd like to take it to a shop but, being in a very small town, the one exhaust shop we have wasn't all that interested in replacing these flanges. They are always swamped with work and fixing those flanges didn't seem like something they wanted to do. I'm pretty sure if i pressured them to do it they could but wanted to see if there was something I could do before getting them to do it. They have done work for me for a while but having to wait 3 weeks to get this fixed gets annoying.

How close are you to the next town that has an exhaust shop? The other thing you could do is use JB high temp epoxy to crutch it along until the shop can fix it.

Is the joint upstream of your O2 sensor? Are you getting a lean code? You'll want to verify the leak here is the actual culprit.

Looks like there's sufficient flange material to just replace the gasket and hardware. Beware the old gasket may require a lot of manual labor to chisel out.
