Honestly the frame looks in really good shape. Wire wheel with an angle grinder and POR 15 it. POR15 is expensive but seals rust really well. Just be informed its not fully UV resistant so youll have to add a 2nd coat of something else.

Yeah, that really doesn't look that bad. I just sold my '98 T-100 to my nephew last fall. All I ever did to it was roll around under it once a year on a creeper with a wire brush and some cans of Rustoleum. After the paint dried for a few days, I'd hose down the sandwiched areas with some cheap lubricant oil that's a little thicker than WD-40. That frame still looked pretty decent for a 20 year old vehicle. Just stay ahead of it and you should be fine.

Guys so I checked and it seems worse than I thought. Sorry to hear a dead horse but just so I have peace of mind does anyone think this will be a severe issue in the next 5-10 years? I’m taking it to my mechanic tomorrow morning to see what I can do to prevent more but please give me an honest opinion.

Yeah that bottom rail is pretty bad. If not treated now, in my unprofessional opinion it wouldn't last 10 years

This is why folks recommend a full inspection prior to purchase. Unfortunately you'll now be able to carry that banner based on experience.

You betcha. Once started, rust doesn't really rest. It doesn't take rain or salt, just a bit of humidity and some occasional puddles. Or car washes.

You might find this thread helpful regarding Toyota's frame replacement program. I think I'd be looking for a dealer experienced with this. Or if you bought it from a Toyota dealer, I'd be visiting the general manager............

You will need a new frame for sure down the road.

I had a 98 tacoma that had 17yrs of Colorado road travel, no rust. I bet your truck migrated to Co from a salt state.

You didn't specify WHERE in Ca that you live. If you live near the coast (especially Northern CA) you are screwed, whether it's rusted now or not. You would need to aggressively treat the frame.

I know ,these fucking dealerships suck. They said my frame is good. No 10mm holes .I pointed out what is in that picture and the guy said that was normal, wtf . Thats ok because I skipped cleaning and painting it this past fall . So soon I will be under it looking for holes with a hammer .:D

My bad I meant to say that I’m in Southern California. Orange County. Very very moderate weather so I think that after some DIY treatment, the rust will at least spread at a MUCH slower rate. This body style is so hard to find and it’s runs so strong. I love this truck. Just gonna keep sendin it

I just had the frame replaced on my “09”, dealer did a great job. I would like to suggest to find a good reliable Toyota Dealer. They WILL have been replacing frames for about 3yrs. now. They know exactly what to look for and will know if your frame needs replaced.
The dealer gets paid well from
Toyota and should provide a loaner car at no cost. Frame replacement should not cost you a dime, unless you opt for new rear shocks and front struts, as I did.
    I’m thinking it needs replaced.
    Good Luck !!
