Hello! I need some advice. I bought a used 2015 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport in March of 2021. Well, a noise started up and I took it to the shop. They told me it's totally rusted and now I need new leaf springs, rack & pinion bushings, axle shafts, tie rods and shock coil springs. The total is over $7500. I have 75,000 miles on the truck. I find it hard to believe that all of this has to be replaced at 75,000 miles.
I contacted Toyota USA and they told me I had to contact Toyota Canada since that is where it originally was sold. I live in Central California. I don't know what to do. I did email Toyota Canada and am waiting for them to get back to me. I asked them to email or call me because there only allowed 200 words and I couldn't say what I need to say in that little amount of words.
What should I do? I still have 4 more years to pay on this truck and dont have nearly $7,500 to spend. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Have you taken the truck to be inspected by a Toyota dealer?

Is there no phone # for Toyota Canada?

I contacted Toyota here in USA and they told me I have to talk to the Canada Toyota since it was originally sold in Canada. I did find a phone number, but it was after hours, so I emailed them. I can call tomorrow. I can't just drive to Canada to have them inspect it, so I will have to see what they say. The shop says it's too dangerous to drive. I'm borrowing my brother in law's truck at the moment, but he's going to need it back. I'm stuck with not many options, so I'm hoping they can help.

    Call Toyota Canada tomorrow.

Not sure how far you are from a Toyota dealer, but I would at least give your local dealer a call tomorrow and ask for assistance. They will probably tell you to bring the vehicle in for an inspection.

As for driving it, post up some images onto here. We can give you an idea of whether or not it’s an imminent death trap. But if it’s a 2015, I would think the shop might be exaggerating a bit.

Pictures of the leaf springs, tie rods, front shocks, and front axles, would be helpful for folks to give you feedback. I suspect the shop is trying to bend you over. I'd take it somewhere else for a second opinion before giving that shop a dime.

Thanks for your reply. I'll see if I can get some pictures. I will try to contact a dealer in Fresno. That's the closest one to me and see what they say. The USA Toyota acted like they didn't want to deal with me because it's from Canada. I believe it was in Washington after Canada and then Reno, NV where I bought it and I took it to California. Thank you!!

Thanks Littles. I would hope they wouldn't do that since it's my brother in law's shop. I'll let you all know what I find out! Thanks!!

Highly doubt that you'll get a remedy from toyota unless it's a frame rot issue, which none of this is. That shop just threw a pile of shit at you to fix, without pointing to what the actual problem is.

What's the nature of the noise you are hearing? Is it a clunk? Metal on metal? When do you hear it? Does it occur when going over bumps? While turning?

The noise happens mostly slowing down on a hill, but does rattle over bumps, just not all of the time. It usually slides a little over bumps going 55 mph in a curve. If I make a sharp turn turning the steering wheel to the right, it slides as well. I don't really feel safe driving it. That's why I'm using their truck for as long as I can. They told me the rust has caused all of these things to break, so I'll have to see what Toyota near me says and Toyota Canada. I'll keep you updated and post pictures once I get them.

I dont think your brother in law likes you or just doesnt want to help you. Id love to see a detailed breakdown of that $7500. if I add up all the parts you mentioned, I'd have a hard time coming up with more than $1000-1500 in parts buying almost everything new and upgrading suspension while you're at it.

    Axles are $100ish a piece.
    Steering bushings like $30
    Upgraded Leaf springs $300-500
Brand new 5100 coilovers would be an upgrade and are like $500ish new.
Tie rods are less than $50 a piece

I'll round it up to $2000 for the sake of discussion. Even at $100 an hour which would not be a friends and family rate, that's 60 hours of labor. Thats absurd. I doubt there's 20 hours of labor between everything.
