I also had no idea of the rust issue with Tacomas, but knew Japanese imports in general had rust issues because of the thin gauge metal they used. I wanted to make sure my frame did not become another case for a Toyota replacement. My 2nd Gen started life in Hawaii, so it did not have road salt exposure, but did have peeling clear coat and a rusted roof. So I had the truck repainted and started the battle against rust, now that it is on the East coast, CONUS. I have used this thread for product recommendations and would like to add my first hand experience to the mix. Because I have little to no rust on the frame, I did not just want to start with Fluid Filming everything. I knew I wanted to start to clean & paint the frame and components. I started with the front armor and crash bar. I used Action Gell on the bolts, as well as Rust Reformer. I did a fair comparison of both products on surface rust and rusted bolts. I documented the process on my 'a little restoration' page. Please read through my posting for the info, the last two pages focus on the rust products. No one has sponsored my page in anyway. ( just sayin')

I just want to update that my truck is a 2011 year model, has been getting Krown treated since 2014 and doesn’t have a single speck of rust after 8 salt filled PA winters.

I think it is just down to lots of crawling around the frame and doing it by hand. That is what I have started to do. Removal of grease & dirt, and getting into the hard to reach places by improvising with tools you make for that particular area. I also plan on getting one of those small penlight cameras to see inside the boxed sections of the frame. :notsure:

Thanks for the post. To my mind, probably some of the most valuable contributions to this thread will be members long-term observations/evaluations of various products effectiveness. Keep them coming people.

Yes, do NOT paint over loose paint chips, and don't spray FF until you are sure there isn't serious rut in that area. Those rust chips could be signs of rust eating through from inside to outside. Sounds like you have an arsenal of tools to get the rust monster. You won't be getting a new frame from the dealer, so keep fighting if you love the truck.

I have documented the start of my fight against rust. I have used both Rust Reformer and Action Gell and show how those products have & have not worked. Last two pages on my 'Restoration' thread.

i dont have rust chunks yet that i know of, its just thin paint chips that are de-laminiting with specs of crusty on them. And I still have no clue why they are peeling off from the inside like that!
the Toyota service dept experts claim it to be good, they have seen worse!, but still have not one iota of advice or direction to give me on which to properly protect it, and I'm not exactly sure what their endgame is. I had looked into what new frame cost me and it varies, depending on if i buy a new frame or source a salvaged one from wherever its always warm. a local collision body shop quoted me around $8~9k to swap the frame with a new one.

That factory primer coat is just a pee coat of paint. It does not last long in the elements. My experience tells me, wire wheel off the surface rust and paint it with POR-15. I have done that on the small area I started with.

Anyone using VHT SP229 Rust Convertor or similar on their frame? How does it, and other "rust removing" products, actually work at removing rust? Or is that just sales hype?

Your going to have to tell us what we are looking at, a pitted surface & failed primer, or just de-icing chem on an intact primer.

    Hey Friends

So i love my truck had it about 2 years but the paint has started peeling in little bits but I know will only become more of a problem. I have seen numerous fourms of people having this
problem with toyota in Super White and Blizzard colors. Not looking to have to drag this problem out for years so would like to get an idea of others dealing with same issue. Would like to take it up with Corporate or file class action. We work as a group this issue will get resolved fast.
    Thanks

    Will

gives an idea of how the internal frame coating products looks applying

the needle scaler tool looks to be a mofo royal pain in arse too, abrasive media blaster much more easier to do imo fwiw
