I’m sure this has been discussed a million times but I’m looking at purchasing a 3rd gen Tacoma this weekend. I’m from south central PA and the truck I’m looking at is coming from Northern pa. The truck already seeing two pa winters (it’s a 17 and sold in the summer of 17) I want to get a head start on everything..

my question is what’s your guy’s experience with using cavity wax on frames etc? I thought about using cavity wax or fluid film etc. Also transmission fluid ran across my mind. My fear is though if I spray the inside of the frame with trans fluid would that “trap” the junk inside? Or would it kill the salt etc.. Any tips?

Go with fluid film, get it done every six months or so and it will keep your truck frame looking pristine. Check are at local guys in your area that might do it for $40 or so.

I'm from Northeast Pa. and have my truck sprayed with Krown every year.. $148..... in Mechanicsburg.... Line-X of Cumberland county. Fluid Film is also big on this forum... you can either have them sprayed by a shop or do it yourself. My truck and it's frame look great so far....5 years of road salt and no rust on the frame. They also spray inside the rocker panels, engine compartment, tailgate, inside the door jambs.

Krown. I have a 2010 in the northeast that has a nearly rust free frame. It gets done every fall around oct/nov. As stated, they do the insides of all the body panels as well.

That’s not to far from me since I live in Harrisburg and am from Carlisle! The truck I’m looking at is somewhat up your way at a toyota dealer.. I’m looking at in Wilkes-Barre

Reviving this older thread with a few questions. I plan to crawl under my taco and do the following:
    1. Wire brush away any visible rust.
      • Is there anything to NOT wire brush?
      • Should I only be brushing the steel frame, nothing else?
    2. Apply Por15 top coat paint.
      • Again, is there anything to NOT paint? Or just go nuts down there.
    3. Apply Fluid Film coating.
      • Any tips or ticks here?
      • How often should I re-apply? (northern california)

Just be smart. Don't abraid anything rubber or plastic/soft. That's about it. That goes for all of your bullet points.

I apply FF twice a year, usually in late fall before the winter starts and once again in late spring early summer. Goal is to just get under there and look around for any rust spots and treat early. I found 2 spots directly behind my front tires probably from a rock kicking up, its pretty small a few mm so i'll probably wire brush it in the spring and treat it.

I'm wondering if i should treat it or let Toyota do it under their "frame recall" I'm afraid they'll do something to just mask the rust and it'll still be rusting underneath whatever they do

I saw someone recommend some cosmoline, RP-36 or something like that, if I lived in a rusty area, that's what I'd do, then fluid film would be second.
