    Hi there,

I live in Maui, and I just purchased a 2019 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 TRD Off Road, and I had a question about rust protection for the underbody and for the body.

With all of the salt we have in the air here, whether parking close to or far from the beach, I’m pretty concerned about protecting the underside of my truck from rust, as well as the body. Does anyone have any recommendations on what to do besides frequently washing the vehicle? Is there a shop I can go to to purchase a rust protection package?

I’ve also attached an image with rust I found beneath the vehicle on just the second day of ownership. Is the rust in that picture normal?

    Thanks!

The part you pictured is not painted, its bare metal. It will rust, this is normal. But, if you want to save your truck from rusting, get fluid film and hose the whole underside of the truck down with it. Do this every year or so.

That rust you see is normal. For frame rust prevention, try fluid film. If you don't have a sprayer they sell it in aerosol cans. PM/contact @stun gun , he's a member here and has been using a different coating that seems to be great. I don't remember what it's called though.

Welcome to TW! I used to live on the beach, and felt I had the same problems. After a lot of research the only safe way I found was fluid film or an application similar to it. There are options for a “rust proof spray” that almost looks like a powder coat but those will cause more harm because the rust will get under it and spread. Where as fluid film is more of like a oily film so it makes it more difficult to oxidize.

Has anyone used a particular brand of liquid film on the underbed of their truck, and had success preventing rust?

I would love to know which brand to buy.

ALSO, has anyone tried painting POR-15 on the underbed of their truck? I’ve heard great things, but I don’t know what I can and CANNOT paint without causing damage to parts. Thanks!

Fluid Film mentioned a bunch of times above is the brand name.

Fluid film is amazing. I use that stuff for the hinges on shipping containers. I've used it for my chassis and leaf springs protection. It's the best. Coat your chassis at least once a year in it.

I also have this problem with a new truck. I previously posted this question. The responses I got were not to worry about it.

Anyone tried Por-15 for rusted areas?

Does Liquid Film only prevent the rust?

Por-15 is a great product as well. The difficulty with it is that it has to be painted on with a brush vs fluid film comes in an aerosol can.

Once rust happens, it doesnt unhappen, meaning you can only prevent or slow, no reverse.

Fluid film is an excellent product thats very easily applied every oil change in a few min (when I do mine). Por-15 is the next step up. Apply yearly, but be weary of it dripping on your driveway or garage since it's almost like an epoxy.

POR 15 is to be applied to metals that are already rusted while Fluid Film is to prevent and or stop rust. Most here need to use only the FF.

Krown is great, thinner than fluid film so it creeps better and doesnt smell like a dead animal
