Doing prep work for frame rust prevention/repair. Wire brushing frame to get rid of rust. Going to prep then paint with POR 15. These pictures are of the frame under the bed on passengers side. This is the layered sheet metal of the frame. I noticed some warping. The thicker parts of the metal are solid.

Seeking others opinion. Is this bad??¿

Have you had a dealership inspect it, frame replacement goes out 12 years. If it’s bad enough it could qualify for a new frame.

Looking at the pictures I don't think that would qualify for frame replacement. Seeing all these threads about rust makes me glad I live in Oregon. No salted roads = no rusted frames.

If that’s the worst rust on your frame then it’s time to be proactive and get it under control. That sandwich area really calls for a fluid undercoating that never dries, something that can creep and work it’s way into that layered metal. You also need to be vigilant with applying it once a year because it will wash off with road spray. Grind and paint other parts if you wish, but don’t paint over the sandwich area cause it will still continue to rust underneath. If it was me, I would forget the paint and just undercoat the whole frame with a good liquid creeping undercoating. Don’t let the dealer encapsulate the frame with there product.

@spitdog Thanks for the suggestions. I go in Friday for a frame inspection, I'm hesitant to have the dealer put their CRC on it.

I purchased this truck this past October, was going to coat with POR 15 then Rustoleum Undercoating, but will see what the frame inspection says.

On my 1st gen Tacoma I had a little rust on the back frame rails. I wired wheel and removed the rust, then I primed it with a good metal primer, then rustoleum black paint. It looked good for about 1.5 years, then I starting getting these small little blisters in the paint, then eventually small specs of rust.

As good as I thought I did with the wire wheel, primer and paint. It wasn’t good enough.

Then when I bought my 2015 I sprayed it with fluid film the day I brought it home from the dealer, that was dec 2014. To this day no rust. I apply it every fall. Easy to do. And cheap. A gal last me 3 yrs.

Check the inside of the front boxed section, by the catalytic converter. That is where mine rotted out. Mine is being replaced because of it. Also check by the leaf spring hangers.

You should of been coating your frame from day 1,take it for an inspection, but I really don't think it will get a new frame.

Check this area with a hammer. Mine looked okay visually but I gave it a few taps and the metal just buckled.

Rattle can is exponentially thinner than a true paint job so any rock chip, even ones tinier than noticeable are just going to accumulate moisture and start flaking the paint. The key for rattle can is paint then cure then topcoat with fluid film or your favorite rust protectant.

I didn’t use a rattle can. All brush. But I see your point and that would probably work good. I would just FF it every fall and forget the paint.

Instead of sitting around wondering and asking strangers take it to a dealer and have them check it. You’ve nothing to lose. Time is running out quickly. Do it now.

@Sprig the frame passed inspection. I didn’t qualify for CRC either. Next step is removing the surface rust and put a good coat of POR 15 on it.

I’m curious what the criteria is to qualify for frame replacement? I live in California, my truck is 10 years old and not a spec of rust. No offense but to me the rust on your frame looks significant , looks like hell and it can only get worse. You’d think that since this is a Toyota problem that they would take care if cleaning up and protecting the frame
