Hey there I’m new member to this forum and a new Tacoma owner. background info I just bought this 2021 trd sport 3 months ago with under 7,500 miles on it. Must have missed this at the dealership. I live in the upper Midwest (Minnesota).

I’m posting today because I found a small dime sized rust spot inside my rear driver side door. I’m looking for instructions on how to take care of this and for preventing it from getting worse. Looks like maybe it was chipped paint from the previous owner?

Any thread links or recommendations are greatly appreciated.

    Also…

Any recommended products for inside the doors where I found this rust spot? sprays, waxes?

    Thanks in advance!

    Any chance it's under warranty?

See if the dealer will fix it.

If not sand it down a bit and throw some paint on it.

It’s still got some of the original warranty left. I’ll have to read up of this is covered! Thanks for the idea.

look like damage,,, not a manufacture's defect, but it's hard to tell from the pic,,, it's zoomed WAY.
Also look and make sure water/salt is not collecting inside or behind this, causing the rust.

    Sand it and paint it.

W40, wait like hour, then sand and paint over would work on rust BUT

That looks like ROT, which might be deeper than it looks. Hell it might be even under that paint up and down

Years ago, when I lived in Ohio, I found a couple spots that *appear* like that (there just might be deeper damage as posted already). I scraped down and sprayed a (randomly chosen) rust inhibitor on the area ... the rust never advanced or even reappeared.

Too many trucks and mods to list.. check builds
look like that side of the trucks had any paint work done? thats an odd spot to rust unless someone closed the door on something there

Yep, read the warranty. I don’t know Toyotas current lingo, but it’s typically a corrosion “perforation” warranty, meaning there has to be perforation, or a hole caused by corrosion, that’s a certain diameter in size.

In unrelated news, poking a screw driver through the rust and inspecting the size will help. Let the area corrode a bit further after the fresh penetration to make sure the oxidation protection helps validate warranty coverage and not intentional damage.

Upon further inspection the rubber door gasket has a yellow plastic plug under it that holds it in place around the door. and when the door closes the plastic seems to close where the rust spot is. I wonder if continual scraping and ware from the plastic plug could have cause this? IMG_5554.jpg

Doubtful, it might wear the paint over the years. I’m a low mileage, nearly new vehicle, this looks to be damage of some sort.

For just a couple year old, that is a NASTY rust booger and needs to be fixed correctly or it's going to rust through in just a couple more years. Needs to be taped off well, soda blasted to get ALL the rust out of it, treated with a zinc rich primer well and then painted. Whatever is hitting it needs to be adjusted or removed.

What an odd spot. Sand it down to bare metal about a 1/4” bigger than it is. Then put a sealing primer, then primer, paint. If you can’t find a sealing primer get an etching primer then paint.

Speaking of rust, have you looked under your truck?

If you "just" bought it, take it back to the dealer!!
