Yes I agree and this is why you can clearly notice it on white. I bought a brand new pearl white Lexus and noticed tiny rust dots on it. They can be easy removed with my finger but made the dealer buff the whole car.

I bought a white 4runner and after every winter I clay bar it, try clay barring yours and see what happens. On mine I know its surface contaminants because it's on the plastic bumpers, door handles etc.
The O.P looks like the surface contaminants have set in and may have affected your actual paint

Just started finding these on my 2011 double cab. Has anyone gotten Toyota to do anything about it?

Its a safe bet Toyota will not warranty any paint issues. The vast majority of these issues are from lack of proper paint care and not a paint flaw.

Its hard to tell in the phots but is it clear the paint has flaked off exposing the metal panel?
If this is the case a repaint is the only perfect fix.

If it doesn’t seem like the paint is flaking you should wash the truck and use a clay bar to clean your truck and also find a product like Iron-X to spray on the truck to neutrilize and help remove embedded contamination.

Very often industrial fallout, rail dust, brakedust etc embeds in the paint and will start rusting. You just need to remove the embedded contamination. If you don’t the corrosion will eventually eat away the paint and it will flake off and rust horribly.

Clay bar your vehicle yearly to prevent this.

Is it possible the lack of a secondary coat of clear on white trucks is why other colors are not showing this? Plus white is like a blank canvas. I know they don’t clear the white.

My parents brand new Lexus in silver had rail dust on hood. 25 miles on it and I had to clay bar it. Dust was stuck on clear coat. If that was a straight base with no clear it may start to bleed/stain like the photos above.

The clear seems to be a barrier of sorts.

White is no less durable than clear coated colors.

In fact it holds up better from a detail perspective. Typically white is a more abused color because of this. It shows less swirling, etching, and oxidation so people go longer before addressing paint issues.

White is plenty durable (and actually thicker than other paint jobs)

Its the only color I’ll buy because of this.

I have a few spots as well on the forward facing window frames on my 2015 DCLB. Mine are clearly from stone chipping which I will touch up. Mine is black though, so you have to look very hard to see them.

On my 2013 DCSB, I had rust spots appearing just like yours above. Less noticeable on my MGM (grey) truck, but easy enough to see when giving the truck a sponge bath.

I had all 4 doors repaired under Toyota ECP warranty (which I bought into for 5-years) with rust protection to 60,000 km performed at 59,800 km in December of 2015.

I talked to the body shop who performed the work, and they claimed their respray should outlast the original because they use thicker paint than OEM. At 105,000km now and no sign of the spots reappearaning.

Long story short, Toyota ate the bill. Cost me nothing out of pocket (so long as you disregard the $2,500 extended warranty I bought into).

"ALSO THRU BUSINESS OFF BOUGHT RUST PROTECTION WITH SOME SPOTS UNDER 3YR/60000" This is loosely translated from the ancient dealership dilect, roughly meaning "Damn, can't believe the customer was right, we do have to pay for this"

The actual repair work was billed a few weeks later direct to the dealership, so I never received an invoice.

This is why I clay bar all my vehicles routinely. I had a few embedded rail dust/contaminant window frame spots on a 2001 4Runner that ran away into bubbling paint after a single winter. Bare minimum you should be pulling the crap out of the paint with clay before cold weather and at first warm weather (unless you happen to have a heated and well-lit garage, then you can do it whenever you want). Regular hand washing/waxing helps to keep you familiar with the paint condition to notice and take care of small issues before they have time to turn into big problems.

and it's also super satisfying to have a sparkly truck

Yup, but they only got me once. Better than paying parts + labour on that filter. OEM equivalents ever since that crappy lesson.

I see tiny rust spots on these areas all the time and clay bar them off to keep those areas under control.

But in your case, it is too late because it already ate through the paint.

Thank you for the responses. Admittedly, I have never used a clay bar on it. However, I do wash it fairly regularly and it's been detailed a few times. With the same care practices, none of my previous Toyota trucks ('00 Tacoma, '82 pickup) presented this issue. Same weather (Southern California).
