A thread of who knows best when it comes to rust prevention...I've never seen one of these before.

Welds rust. Sand blast and paint pretty much a yearly thing in the rust belt. I'm in Maine not far from NH they seem to remove snow with salt, my truck gets the once over twice a year with FF it had rusty spots from the factory, granted I own a lift but my frame is black. (I am too after the work is done) It's a 2011.

Being from Ohio, my 2019 looked the same until last year. Cleaned up all the surface rust and took it to Krown for undercoating. Haven't had any trouble with it since.

Not so much. The rust happens during the winter and especially through out spring as freeze/thaw cycles start.

Rust will happen anytime you have oxygen with a wet, or humid environment. Add salt to that its like throwing gasoline on a fire .

Does anyone make aftermarket wheel well liners for the Tacoma? The stock liners (if you can even call them that) are totally inadequate and about as thick as a cheap milk container. I can't believe how cheap some elements are of this truck.

That’s why you thoroughly clean and rinse the frame when the weather warms up then coat it in the summer when it’s dry. He’s advocating coating a wet frame in the spring and trapping salt under grease.

Wire wheel the welds, brush on POR 15 and top coat with semi-gloss tremclad for blending. Before winter hits get underneath and spray all the surfaces with fluid film. If you treat your truck annually, it'll be looking the same a decade from now.

Welds on these trucks always rust long before the frame, and it'll take a few seasons of neglect before you'll start having frame paint peel. If you treat it before this peeling occurs, you'll have no issues. Make this an annual thing on a hot summer weekend so you can wash and properly dry it ahead of the painting and you'll be fine.

I agree. They are pathetic. I think a sharp rock will tear them.

does not look that bad. will suggest rust reformer. POR-15 you can use a wire brush, to remove the rust flakes, then an alcohol rag to clean the area and then brush the POR-15 that will change the remaining rust to steel oxide and you'll be covered.

That’s surface rust. Happens to every vehicle in the rust belt . You can spend time chasing after it every year or pay a shop to coat it yearly with Fluid Film or Cosmoline type protection. But its not abnormal.

Anyone can insult someone. How about making a convincing argument and proving me wrong? Too cowardly?

    Oh look, another mod....
I'm glad I don't have to worry about this. Wait...do Tacoma owners in North Texas have to worry about this? We never salt our roads.

Not piggy backin on what Ol' Sharpish said there, but your initial comment stating 'bad advise' lacks logic imo. Unless of course you have a heated garage to leave the truck in for minimum a week (I would guess it would take even longer to draw out every bit of moisture in that frame), and a second vehicle to use in the meantime... coating the frame end of summer, after months of dry weather, logically makes sense. Unless I'm missing something?

Also wanted to ask anyone familiar with POR 15, seems to be a few of you suggesting that product, do y'all use the Degreaser and Metal Prep products by them as well?

I have an ‘06 4Runner that spent the first 10 years in the NE. Looked a lot like that 10 yrs ago. Still looks like that today. I’ve done zero to cover/fix/etc. I would bet my paycheck that the interior will deteriorate faster than that frame will rot from here on out. Drive it like you stole it. Keep washing it. Forget it.

If you live around here like in the salt belt, op should take you up on that offer.
