The coating doesn’t need to be done immediately, but I personally would, maybe after going for a quick drive to air dry. I use an oil based coating, so that will displace any water left over from the cleaning process.

Its not an exact science. Unless we’re talking about leaving shitty salt spray up inside your frame for 6 months before doing anything about it, like some seem to prefer.

    how about this:
*****: Spring: clean and wash as much salt off as possible, wait until dry. Apply anti rust coating of choice, including inside the frame and inside body panels. Autumn: repeat entire process.

****: Spring: clean and wash as much salt off as possible, wait until dry. Apply anti rust coating of choice, including inside the frame and inside body panels. No repeat, only once annually.

***: Spring: clean and wash as much salt off as possible. Summer: Apply anti rust coating of choice, including inside the frame and inside body panels.

**: Autumn: clean and wash as much salt off as possible. Apply anti rust coating of choice, including inside the frame and inside body panels.

    *: rain’ll get it

From my years of experience with these toyota beer can frames, its best to coat them the sooner the better before they have a chance to pick up any surface rust.

Well, got about 400 miles on my 22 and plan on throwing it up on the lift this weekend and covering it with corrosion free formula 3000, will give a quick wipe down before I start, but I think I'm getting it early enough. Plan on doing it once a year, fingers crossed.

Haven't heard of that stuff, but i can tell you cosmoline RP-342 is really good stuff where you don't need to keep reapplying it every year, or sooner like those lanolin based corrosion protectors. To me, anything that wash's away in that short of a period ends up costing more in cost, and labor in the long run.

Hopefully it's not that tedious, but I'm already committed to the Formula 3000 as I have the 5-gallon bucket sitting in the garage already (so I'm already committed for the first few years) :). It seems to often be compared to fluid film, but seems to be much easier on rubber. I guess either way, with me living in MI, anything is better than nothing.

I'll agree with that anything is better than nothing when it comes to preventing rust. Problem with using something similar like fluid flim, your kind of stuck with it as a buddy found out after he had use fluid flim, and later tried spraying cosmoline on his tacoma undercarriage. The cosmoline had a reaction never setting up, and drying. He ended up with a dripping mess in his driveway that never dried. I think if he tried power washing his chassis real good to get all the fluid flim residue off it, maybe he would have had better luck.

Cosmoline scares me though, being the black waxy layer that it'll be, it's a commitment for sure. In my simple mind, F3000 being applied annually or as they ask for every 18 months, seems like I'd have a somewhat tidier undercarriage. Of course, I know it's a commitment from my side for labor to make sure I don't get slack and skip a year, at least for the time being I think I am up for the task. Hell, I got 5 gallons to blow throw. So maybe if I don't like, I'll be handing out free under sprays to all my buddies to blow through it and then switch to something else.

The cosmoline is more afraid of you then you are of it.

Not a speck of rust on my 2020 w/ 17k miles living in Denver. I love this coming from the Midwest…. So your answer to the problem is - relocate.

If for whatever reason you need to remove the cosmoline, look into dry ice blasting. It's expensive, but thorough.

Cosmoline comes right off with mineral spirits or something similar. Stuff like fluid flim wash's away with water. What do you think will happen with fluid flim on your truck after a few months if the roads are wet? I've used both and will never go back to fluid flim for a vehicle. It belongs more on lawn mower decks.

Oh, I know; I've cleaned plenty of surplus rifles.
    Just sayin'...
I used LPS when I bought mine.
