the under carriage of my 2003 is shot. is it feasible (worth it) to replace the differential, springs et al to deal with a leaky rear end? it's an SR5 4x4 in otherwise good shape, just over 100,000 on it, but I'm too old and inexperienced to do much of the work myself. thanks

Just what are you calling the under carriage ??

If you mean the Frame I would address that issue before a leaky axle housing

specifically the axle housing. its leaking and the fill plug is very badly rusted so I can't easily top it off. if I replace it the springs and u-bolts would be done as well maybe wheels too

Since this is a 2003 does the truck have a new frame ??

You plan to get a used axle swap your differential in or hunt for a used axle with the same gear ratio??

Are you doing this yourself or needing to pay someone ??

Only you know or can decide if this is worth doing

hi, I didn't qualify for a new frame; I'm not sure I understand your second question (and will have to do some research to find the gear ratio); I will have it done with maybe me helping a little; it's definitely subjective as to whether or not it's worth it- I was hoping to hear from people who have done it so I could figure it out

Your front and rear gear ratios need to be the same if not they will both turn at different speeds not good for the transfer case

Maybe look into fixing the axle that is the truck now

It would be cheaper get the old fill plug out replace with a new one

Using a epoxy suitable for gear oil fix your leak then paint .

what else would you do while the axle is out ??

Here in Pa I have never been able to get U Bolts off without cutting due to all the rust on the threads

New Springs are just going to add to the over all cost

Your going to have your labor cost even if it is only food and beverage

Hunting for a used axle purchase price transportation or pick expenses

What are the rear brakes like ?? I find it easier to remove them to get the axles out unless you plan to just roll the old axle out and the used one in

Really hard to put a price when at this time there are so many unknown costs

I used permatex cold steel and it worked about a day so today I traded for a 2015 sr5 4x4 with only 6,000mi. i'll miss the old fellow but the rust issue had me considering gmc. thanks for your input
