    Hi everyone,

Super excited to be a part of this awesome site and to be a new Tacoma owner. Purchasing a Tacoma (2012 DCSB) was a big deal for me, but I'm finally here.

I took my newly purchased Tacoma into the dealer to have the frame inspected (purchased from MA) and to have some fluids changed. The service techs said they found some rust in a couple spots, but they banged on it with a hammer and it was too solid to count for frame replacement.

However, the service tech told me NOT to get the CRC application because they said it would void a future frame replacement. They said that getting the CRC application would mean that Toyota would consider the problem "rectified" and would not be responsible for later frame replacement if a rust hole did eventually develop.

Instead the service tech said keep bringing it in every 6 months until it develops a hole and then get the frame replaced, but stressed to me to NEVER get the CRC application otherwise it will void the warranty.

The service announcement from Toyota says the exact opposite:
    https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2019/MC-10169416-9999.pdf
"Note: If a vehicle is eligible to receive the CRC application under LSC K0D, but the remedy is not performed before the expiration of LSC K0D, the vehicle will not be eligible for frame replacement coverage under CSP ZKA. "

Anyone run into this? What should I do? I was banking on a frame replacement in the future otherwise I would have never risked buying a used Tacoma from salt state.

Im waiting to see what someone more experienced than me says about this, but seems like i would bring them that tsb and ask again, and if they keep up with the ‘dont do crc’ business, have them put it in writing and see who’s willing to sign it.

Pretty straight forward. Definitely question the dealer.

If you read the TSB ( which you did ) it plain as day says you need to have the coating done IF it qualifies for it. Which it seems yours does.

Note: If a vehicle is eligible to receive the CRC application under LSC K0D, but the remedy is not performed before the expiration of LSC K0D, the vehicle will not be eligible for frame replacement coverage under CSP ZKA.

As crappy as it sounds you should do it before the expiration of LSC KOD. To protect your interest in the future if you don't and get a hole later they have every right to tell you to eat it.

    I strongly suggest another dealer.

Do you have the names of who told you to not get the coating?? Confused or steering the OP in the wrong direction.

This was like the first generation coating that needed done to qualify for the extended warranty if you missed the coating deadline you were finished

Thanks for the advice. I'll definitely be taking it to a different dealer now and know now to avoid this dealer (Philly area). I did verify by calling Toyota customer care and CRC must be applied during the Limited Service Campaign to be eligible for later frame replacement.

    Thanks for the warm welcome!

It’s the exact opposite of what that tech was saying. If you DONT get the coating done before that campaign ends, the extended frame warranty is voided. If you DO get the coating done and the frame fails, they will replace the frame.

The first communication from Toyota advises this is a 12 year warranty from date of first service.

The CRC application is required by the end of 2021 or the 12 year warranty is void per the second letter.

It's for 12 years, not forever. The 'inspection criteria' is not documented to the consumer.

This is a mess. Mine is a '15. I did my due diligence BEFORE PURCHASE and was told the frame issues had been RESOLVED.

I bought a Toyota because of their reputation for quality.

Burned again. These car companies are all the same... lips moving = lying.

All frames rust in the crappy road salt and chemical regions. Have you seen any other vehicle manufacturer Ford Chevy, Dodge ... replacing frames under any conditions?

    I haven't.

My understanding is it was (another) class action suit.

    They didn't do this voluntarily.

Yes, they were replacing Frames Before the Class Action Lawsuit.

The Lawsuit only made it mandatory by agreement.

    https://www.torquenews.com/1083/tac...ed-frame-replacement-coverage-monday-may-2018

About one year ago, Toyota entered into a formal agreement to extend warranty coverage on model year 2004 through 2005 through 2010 model year Tacomas, 2005-2008 Sequoias and 2007 and 2008 Tundras. Tacomas build during these years have proven to have significant rusting and corrosion issues with the frames of the trucks in certain climates. Toyota had been replacing frames on these trucks informally as a goodwill gesture, but on May 21, 2017 Toyota entered into a legal agreement with a class of customers to do the work. Toyota's official name for this is the "Warranty Enhancement Program." Many Tacoma owners just call it the "Frame rot recall."

They also had a Buy Back Program that was announced in 2008.

    https://www.reuters.com/article/us-...buy-back-rusted-tacomas-idUSN0729075220080508

Toyota is offering to buy back Tacoma trucks built between 1995 and 2000 with frames deemed to be so badly rusted they cannot be repaired at one and a half times the most generous resale value as calculated by Kelly Blue Book.

Picked up the truck yesterday from the dealer cause I had some fluids done as well as the frame inspection, transmission was shifting strange, took it back this morning and it was a quart low on ATF. The tech had spilled a bunch when filling it and didn't bother to check the level cause he was in a rush. Spoke with the manager about these issues and he told me the tech was wrong about the frame warranty (obviously), had the transmission filled to the proper level, and offered to replace my front brakes for free (calipers had stuck pistons).

Glad you got the sorted out!!

People in a hurry we just had one where the tech sprayed oil all over the engine never cleaned it up or said nothing.

So where are you on the frame CRC application?

I'm trying to determine if this actually has any value at all, or if we're just painting over rust here.

I'm not concerned about the 12 year warranty, I am very concerned about making my 20 year longevity goal with the vehicle.

    That why I bought it.

I'm not about to rely on 'corporate goodwill'.

The KOD LSD expires early 2022. Get your frames inspected about October 2021 to see if you qualify for a new frame or just the CRC for now. That was the recommendation to me.

I got my frame on my 2015 inspected and I qualify for the CRC treatment. However, I tried to schedule the service and my dealer said that none of their techs have taken the Toyota class for the instruction on the CRC Application and classes have been cancelled due to COVID. Anybody run into this?

I suspect Toyota will have to address this issue across the board and extend current deadlines.
