I missed the buyback.. its a 2002, I did recently go to the Dealership though and they said the frame was ok for now. They won't buy it back though because of the frame will they? Don't they just exchange the frame out?

Looks like the entire truck is rusted all to hell. I would think they should stand behind the product and put you in a new or new to you Tacoma

If its rusted so bad that oil is leaking out then that metal is thin. That would be like welding a soda can.
Find a new rear in a salvage yard for a couple hundred bucks and spend a Saturday swapping it out. Then its done right and you wont have problems 500 miles or 6 months down the road.

Well that didn't happen over night and did you look under the truck before you bought it, I would of ran as fast as I could at one glance of the under carriage! I would do a closer inspection, and from what I see I would bet that there are holes in the frame, have another dealer or a Toyota factory rep take a look at the truck!

Found a rear axle assembly that will fit for $900 shipped.. that was the cheapest I could find, its coming from Kentucky. At least it also happened to be the one with the least miles, 85,000.

What do you think a fair price is that I should expect to pay to have it swapped for my old one?

dont pay that go to a junk yard and find one for like 2-300 bucks

    900 expensive

and the toyota buyback is good for 15 years. take it to another dealer see if it passes frame inspection. if it doesnt they will buy it back 150%

He's got a TRD, so I'm assuming it's an Elocker axle. Can you get the housing from a pre-taco pickup and use it? Basically, I know the TRD 3rds are the older 8" style, is the housing the same from a pre-taco to a taco?

I thought they only bought back 98-00 Taco's? I also read that if my truck fails the frame inspection that they will replace the frame for free, not buy the truck...

Can't find a Rear assembly w/ diff lock, 4x4, and 4.10 for less than $650... and $650 was in Cali, which after shipping would be $900

I thought about buying a housing buy itself, but even then, after buying a used housing, shipping, and then buying the Install Kit for my 3rd ($185) I would have a lot in it..

I think going this route will be good because I will get a new (in decent shape) 3rd and I can sell my old one (has a whine b/c bearings are bad... hopefully just bearings) to someone on one of these forums

Those prices are crazy. You can get a new trail gear rear axle housing for $400.

Thats just the housing though... I also need to repair my 3rd member, it has a whine.. Best case scenario its only the pinion bearings, and the install kit for that is $185..

That right there puts me at $600 for the housing and kit, and I was driving on low fluid for a while, so there is possibly more wrong.

Think I'm better off getting an aftermarket housing and the Install kit for my diff?

    01-04's they can/do swap the frame, pre 01 it's only buy-back.

I've read about some getting suspension parts replaced and other badly rusted parts, who knows, maybe you'll get lucky. But first things first, find another dealer and bring that in.
