I recently bought this 2007 without looking underneath. Low miles. Only 80k. Seemed to be a good deal but off course the dealership wouldn't warn me it had bad rust. Should have just looked myself. Rest of the frame isn't horrible... Nothing a little welding couldn't fix. Could I buy a new cross member online? The toyota dealership made it sound like I would have to buy a new frame completely, which is totally out of the question for a 15 year old truck to me. Not a great introduction to the world of toyotas. Makes me miss my old jeep wj. Any recommendations though?

    Yep.
Wow, that frame is rife with rot. I'd be amazed if you didn't have any other problem areas... how's the spare carrier look? Break out the ball peen and get to smacking every inch you can.

IMO, the replacement part isn't worth the cost. Sounds like you can weld, lift the bed off, remove the old crossmember, and fab up a simple cross brace with a means to mount the charcoal canister.

I took a quick look online. For some odd reason the diagrams for 2007 model year are trash, but 2008-up are better. My best guess is the crossmember piece is part number 51206-04010 and costs somewhere around $400 online.

(And as I was typing this @MY50cal replied with the same thing lol)

Though I will disagree on whether to buy or fab - frankly, I think it would be money well-spent. Fabbing up a part could be done, but $300 for a factory fit part is probably cheaper and better than what it will take in time & labor to make one. To me it's a no brainer, I'd buy the part. Probably not all that bad to install either aside from taking off the bed.

Your root cause analysis how you got here is good.

A pre purchase inspection is always a good thing. On any vehicle, especially that old.

If you have safety inspections where you live, based on this one piece, I'd wager the rest of the frame may flunk.

Personally I'd be checking out how to return the truck to the dealer you bought it from, as it's highly likely they should have not sold it in that condition.

Dude that frame is fucked. Look at the rear frame rail and shock mount. I can only imagine how the from of the frame looks. I would get rid of the truck personally.

Check the boxed in sections by the catalytic converters, they like to rust out as well.

A dealership sold you that? Seems like they should be held accountable as it's not only a safety concern but more than likely wouldn't pass an inspection.

I agree. If you purchased it recently I would bring the truck back and try to work something out.

If a car dealer sold you that, they sold you a unsafe vehicle. I think I would give the dealer a chance to make it good with you. I would want a refund.

What dealer sold you this? The vehicle is not safe to sit in, let alone drive. I'd take it back there pronto.

I agree with the above. I'd be surprised if that was the only area that needed attention. If you can, return and refund.

Take that shit back to the dealer, that would of NEVER passed any sort of inspection from the dealership.

If that crossmember is that bad, The ACTAUL areas of the frame that go first are going to be worse.
