    Hey guys,
Giving my truck a long over due bath yesterday when I noticed that I have rust starting to form on my bumper!! My truck is a 2010 TRD Off Road w/ SR5 package... Is this a warantee issue?? I have the chrome bumper... What's worse, I was involved in a car accident back in Novemeber, someone rear ended me... I took the truck to the dealership, and they sent it to their body shop.... It hasn't even been 7 months, and I am already noticing rust! Has this happened to anyone else?? What is the best course of action to take??

I would take it back to the dealer if they had fixed it 7 months ago. This is a common issue but odd fOr a 2010

    Hi Buddy,
It depends if it is an OEM bumper or not. Regardless, it should be covered under the warranty from the parts manufacturer, or the insurance company, or both. Here in CA, an insurance company has to put a LIFETIME WARRANTY on all non-OEM parts, i.e. aftermarket parts. So you need to see if it is an AM bumper or OEM bumper, but regardless, somebody is going to have to get you a new bumper. You should now insist on a NEW OEM bumper, since you're getting the run-around and having to re-live all this garbage.
FYI, I was an insurance adjuster for about 5 years here in CA, so I know how to play the game. Let mw know if you have any questions.

Yep...there's been alot of complaints here with rusting bumpers in the last year and a half or so. Toyota usually tries to blame the owner with some bullshit about them not keeping a good coat of wax on the bumper. I've NEVER waxed a chrome bumper and never seen them rust. It seems they're getting cheap with the plating lately. On my 07 the bumper had no rust showing at all but it just got replaced from being rear ended with a new oem bumper. I guess I'll be waxing this one.

The body shop that replaced the bumper was the body shop that toyota refered me to.... I specified that I only wanted OEM parts placed on the truck....

It's the newer OEM bumpers that are having the issues... they might have the problem fixed now but I wouldn't count on it.

Well if it goes bad at the dealer, maybe put some rust inhibitor on that bumper?

I had rust on my 2011 and it was only 3 months old. They replaced it with another chrome one. I tried to get a black one, but was told they could only replace with same stock part. I asked what we can do when I have to bring it back in for rust again. He said that it was a new design rear bumper and it should not rust. Yeah, right.

The inside of the bumper is fairly accessible from under the truck (dropping the spare tire helps), which is where rust usually starts. The metal on these bumpers is pretty cheap, and lots of water can collect on the inside surface. I don't imagine your dealer will do much unless/until the bumper rusts completely through ("perforation"). Since your's is a fairly new truck you could treat the inside surface of the bumpers with rust converter, primer, paint, and rustproofing. That should help keep rust under control for awhile.

So your saying the inside of your bumper is bare metal? The reason I ask is I just had mine replaced (rear ended) and the new one (OEM) is painted black on the inside. Hopefully it's a updated one with a better chrome application.

Yes, my 2008 has a chrome bumper and the inside is where 99% of the rust is. Eventually it'll make it's way through if there isn't some protection. Maybe the newer models have a primer coat now, but even so I'd add a some paint and rustproofing on top to be safe.

Honestly, some of you guys are such cupcakes.

Maybe you should threaten to give someone at the dealership 'such a pinch'...

...or how about we pretend we have been administered someWHere near the appropriate level of common sense and testosterone and march out wittle selves back to the dealership and explain that this is unacceptible on a new 30.000 vehicle, and tell then to call you when the new one comes in.

    WTF...

Toyota never fixes anything. If the first 2005 rusted the last 2011 they build will rust. They just write a TSB and keeping on doing the same old thing. They are just betting most people won't notice or don't care enough to get it repaired.

Testosterone, lol?? Dude, this ain't a Girlyman vs Hairy Studboy contest at the local bar. You can pretend to be bad-arse all you want but it won't mean diddly to a dealership unless you know what the warranty says and can prove your problem falls under it. Otherwise they'll just think you're a jerk.

By all means, show it to the dealer if your truck is still covered and be firm with your stance, but don't act like a moron. It's better to be smart than Hairy. :argue:

    Nonsense, Chipper,

A new truck with a rusting bumper is an obvious defect. No where was it implied that you walk in there and be a 'jerk. ' What you DON'T do is walk in like a limp wristed little shit and golly geeze your way through it. They walk all over that type. They're favorite custermer....

You'd have to be an imbecile not to grasp the obvious with the facts provided.

I had surface rust on my '10 chrome bumper by the end of this winter. Used some rifle bore paste and it came off in no time. If it happens again this winter, I'll probably take it to the dealer for a replacement. It's been 4 or 5 months though and no new rust or discoloration.

My truck is going in next Monday for the rusty rear bumper. I am going to see if they will put a colour matched one on. The truck is only 8 months old
