I beg to differ. True. Please read the letter carefully. I've taken the liberty of highlighting the relevant info. I've been through this before with a different vehicle. The caveat being, the cold weather state clause, no hook ups involved, it's an obligation, and a requirement to maintain the published warranty on the frame.

I have the same letter. I think we are talking past each other. My point is, the Limited Service Campaign for CRC for our vehicles has not yet been announced.

Once it is announced, one may be able to get their truck treated. Or, one may find that the same proof of penetration for other CRC campaigns will be required.

My dealer has one enclosed bay, and one lift to support this program. They are also a top-ten rated service department. The sheer volume will be overwhelming if the treat every vehicle in the area.

Fair enough, my point being was that I interpreted your response to mean the dealer was doing a favor, when it wasn't. I understand now what you're saying, and you are correct in that it hasn't started yet (CRC). The inspection and frame replacement is separate from the CRC campaign, but in order to maintain the frame warranty for vehicles in the applicable states, Toyota requires that the CRC be applied when available. It's my understanding from my service department that they are in the final phase of training and finalizing the implementation plan.

I'm telling you, the process is invasive. It is not an undercarriage spray. It's applied to the inner frame channels with a wand will take forever. My service manager has said that he expects Toyota to add a caveat requiring dealer inspection to determine qualification - similar to every other Limited Service Campaign once announced. My truck will be one of the first ones to receive the treatment since the shop needs practice - likely in February. I'll let you know how it goes once they finish.

I wasn't debating the process, only the qualification caveat you mentioned. The qualification in this case is state dependent, limited to those states listed, and not relevant to the inspection other than to determine if the frame needs replacing or not. I happen to live in KY. My service department has told me they are using a different material than they have in the past. I have been through this process with a different vehicle (03 Tundra) and a different campaign, but essentially the same process (same service department), and it did involve the invasive process you describe. Inspection is done, if there's the threshold of rust perforation, they replace the frame, if not, it is scheduled to be treated, which is required to be completed for them to honor the warranty if rust occurs in the future.

Good luck, I would be interested in how your experience goes.

So do you guys know what years they have sent this letter out on? I have a 2018 and haven’t received anything. I’m in Indiana and they love to use salt on our roads here.

I totally agree. I think it’s funny when people talk about Tacoma frames being crap then turn around and magically think that t4r/Tundras/etc are any better. The only reason people act that way is the past lawsuit and reputation which really is just people’s confirmation bias coming through.

my other thought on this is majority of people sell the vehicle before rust actually becomes a structural problem, thus the “ive never had problems with my vehicle frame” and anyone who purchases a used one that has rust either doesn’t care about the rust because they aren’t savvy, or doesn’t buy that used vehicle to begin with because they are savvy, so once again “my vehicle doesn’t have rust”. Everyone else is somewhere in between.

Not sure if it was a CA, but the 96-00 is where it all began. My wife had a 96 that was bought back in April 2008.

    lol no.

While there are 24 states that salt the roads, geographically only about 25% of the continental US salts. Other states use gravel and cinders.

FYI I solved the frame rust problem. I moved to a state where it don't snow.

It's never had any rust treatment. I may wash it once or twice in the winter at a self serve car wash. It's a dually so it doesn't fit in a regular car wash. When I wash it I only do the body, not the underside or frame. The only rust I've ever seen on the body is on the driver's door where they drilled for the tow mirrors. The frame still appears black in all areas with the exception of the driver front where the shock tower mount is welded. It is taking on an orange hue, but does not have any scale. I should probably hit that up with some black rust converter paint, but it's never been a priority.

I agree, all trucks can rust. But there's normal surface rust, then there's extensive rot - a big difference. The rotting Toyota frames are on a whole different level. There's clearly something substandard in their manufacturing process, which is a shame.

This map is totally wrong. CA salts, NV salts, WA salts and ID salts. I'd bet there are more, too.

Kentucky uses salt and brine, so I'm not buying that map.

Guys I am just going by research on the internet.
Only two counties in Cali use salt. Kentucky's primary road treatment is not salt or salt brine however they do use it in certain weather conditions. Neither is Nevada, Washington or Idaho. They all use something else and only use salt brine mixed with sand in certain conditions. Don't shoot the messenger. In salt states shown on the map, they use only salt and a LOT of it.

In MA your vehicle will be white after a snow or rain storm from nov-april from the salt on the roads

So you live in South Carolina and are "just going by research on the internet," but are telling me, a WA and NV resident, what my local road crews are laying down on the roads I drive on every day in the winter? Cool story, bro.

I lived in WV for 56 salt covered years. My original post was to correct someone else's post. I don't give a shit if your local crews are laying down gold and caviar. So you know for a fact exactly what every county in those two states uses on the roads? I do in WV.

I bought a 2014 from the dealer on 11/26 and they had treated the frame. They told me they took the whole bed off the truck. The frame is almost perfect though as it is a 31,000 mile truck that does not appear to have been driven on salty roads. Here in KY they salt the heck out of the roads when it does snow, but we only occasionally have enough snow to warrant salting.
