Living here in Canada with our winter ,no choice ,i always had my Tacoma treated with rustproof.
    This is my third one.
This garage does a great job in my town, and certainly it does help with all the salt we deal with during this season. They use pretty much all the same synthetic rust proof stuff.
    125 dollars well spented.
    All the best

@FastEddy59 , do you use any type of commercial rustproofing or DIY? Asking ‘cause you’re in my neck of the woods and I don’t know exactly what they’re using on the roads. Tks

I use KROWN on all of my vehicles. They drill holes in the body panels so they can spray and protect there as well.

For those that Fluid Film themselves, what are you guys doing about body panels? Spraying it also into the engine bay, bottom of doors/hood/tailgate as well?

I didn’t drill any holes to Fluid Film every panel/cavity. I just removed a whole bunch of body plugs and a few bolts. I did the engine bay, suspension and the entire underside too; total overkill (but it was the first time spraying this truck) Almost positive I got that shit everywhere.......
-PSA to anyone removing door striker plate bolts to spray inside pillars = Go easy in those areas or you’ll find you have to clean FF off all your seatbelts when you first go to use them.

I had a lot of the interior apart for other reasons so was able to spray inside the doors, tailgate etc. If I recall correctly, the door speakers are not protected on the backside so spraying blindly is likely to coat the speakers. There are lots of rubber plugs in the rockers that can be removed to get inside them.

This is the bottom of passenger door on my 2004 Honda Odyssey. 15 years in Toronto (canada) winter and all the salt that goes with it.

100% intact seams and no rust and no clogging. It was Krown'd every year of its life and is solid.
Also have a 2015 Tacoma in case you are wondering why i am showing a Honda but its the oldest vehicle so shows the results best.

And as you can tell I do not wash the underbody and bottom of doors. i leave the accumulated oily and yes dirty film on there.

The real issue with door seams is just normal condensation inside the doors etc.
This will collect in the bottom seam and when it freezes it forces the seam open and cause cracks in the paint and even welds. Freezing water can exert a enough force to crack rocks, door seams are easy...
With ever winter this repeats and as soon as some salt spray get in there its game over.

What is good with WD40 type rustproofing is they are heavier than water and get into the seams and force the water out/up.

But a picture speaks a thousand words and this 14 year old door seam says it all

Maybe its the shop but the one that did my 2015 tacoma didnt drill any holes, they just used all the existing rubber plugs and access points... ON my 2004 odyssey they did a couple of holes.

Agreed, it could be just the shop. This year was the first year I had my Tacoma rustproofed because its the first winter im driving it and they had to drill holes.

it was Krown'd... Since its a unibody it has no frame underneath but what it does have is rust free. And it was my winter car so wasn't spared any driving in our salt infested winter roads...

    None.
We’ve had an 04 Tacoma and 05 4 runner since new. The 4 runner frame is pretty much shot, the Tacoma received a new frame from Toyota. Never had any body problems, just the frames and undercarriage. I coated the new 19 Tacoma with a couple of cans of cosmoline like spray. Leaves waxy like film. Fingers crossed, as the new truck is covered in salt at the moment.

I bought a SR 5lug new in 2010 and had the Toyota rust treatment done. The ten years I owned the truck I'd say the frame was in pretty decent shape, but I also sent it through the car wash probably weekly the first few years I owned it, so salt never really sat on it too long.

I decided to do the Toyota rust inhibitor again when I got my new truck this spring, but did an extra FF this fall to be safe. The film has leaked through my door handles and other places. My door drain holes were blocked by the fluid film and I just opened it up with a q-tip. I try not to lower the windows unless they are clean, and I feel like that will help keep water/salt from getting inside. At least that's what I like to think.

Another point if you live in heavy salted area's is not to come home and park in a heated garage.
That will just accelerate the corrosive effect of the salt as all chemical reactions speed up with heat.

i have mentioned Krown several times but i am not suggesting its the best. i have just seen it work very well over 35 years.

I had way back a 1982 Monte Carlo that had been Zeibart'd with the waxy stuff and within 6 year the bottom of the doors where gone. A friend with a 1976 Monte Carlo (6 years older) that had his vehicle Krown'd was still in great shape. Needless to say i never went back to Ziebart.

I like the fact that krown is like WD40. And when they spray/mist it in the door cavities for example it lubricates the lock, window tracks and mechanisms and even gets into and protects the electrical connectors. Considering that these items are only lubricated once when the car is built this helps a lot to keep things running smooth in there.

I do like the look of some of the thicker under carriage sprays like wool wax. And i have never used undercoating which i consider more of a sound deadener than a rustproofing. it can trap things between itself and the frame and when it dries and cracks the salt etc can get up underneath it.

An i don't actually consider anything to be rust proofing, more just rust inhibiting.

Wish i did live in someplace like the southern US where they never use salt but would still consider a once in a while spray with something like krown/rust check for its lubricating properties.

i hear it can get you if you like right on the coast due to sea water exposure.
