We have a 2013 f150 at work with the cab corners completely rotted off and holes all in the rocker panels. And that didn't just happen this year. Terrible imo. Even our dodges at work lasted longer and that's saying something!

Truck is back from the dealer. Service Manager came over to tell me that they looked the truck over and undercoating appeared to have been done when purchased. He acknowledged there were some areas that needed to be redone. Looks to me like that they undercoated the entire truck again. It's still wet - I put my figure in it - thick, black and tar like. I'm pleased with it.

The rear end was sprayed with clear coat - the stuff they use as rust proofing the body panels. He said the undercoating doesn't last on the rear end because of the heat generated while driving.

I hope you're not keeping that long term. That stuff is poison. Not trying to be a dick but in our humid salt filled climate that stuff is no beuno

For us guys that have a bit of rust and a lot of dirt down there, what's the best way to apply FF? Wire brush, sandpaper, etc to clean, then I presume seal the bare surface with some sort of spray paint, let dry, then FF?

I would clean lose debris off with pressure washer or stiff brush in areas you can't spray. Fluid film, as long as it gets on the metal you want to protect, will absorb into the metal and protect it

Tar based crap that eventually dried out, looked great on the outside, but once the metal underneath rusted/rotted it would flake off and expose the damage

Tar based is shitty yes, they got the vulcanized rubber nowdays. Looks like thats what OP got. Its an active undercoating, actually works well and lasts for long time.

Time will tell, anything that dries to the touch is prone to allow salt and moisture to creep under it and rust away unnoticed. Just my experience. Good in theory if it maintains a complete seal and doesn't allow any moisture in. I know new found land has a climate like where I live and it's very destructive on vehicle metal. Common to see 5 year old trucks with serious rust issues that aren't rust checked or fluid film, krown etc.

I would power wash frame/ hose it down, wire wheel / hand brush , Ospho rust neutralizer, Eastwood primer, Eastwood black Chasis paint then Amsoil heavy duty metal protector.I found this regime works best for me. I used to use FF but found it washes away to easily thus more touch up work to perform in summer. Eastwood also makes an internal frame protector which I have been happy with. I would take your time preparation is 98% of the work.

Good thing I am not here for you to believe in things. However you can find many users that have never had rust on their trucks, at least around here. This state does not use salt, ever, for anything... except on food, food is good for salt.

I should also add, I do not mean No rust at all, I was referring to the amount of rust that would completely disintegrate the frame which Toyota (the only one I know of) has had a recall on.

    My opinion:

Fluid film can be sprayed on rusty areas. It will keep the rust from progressing as long as you keep on top of reapplication.

I would not wire brush or sand anything on my 2016 frame because I want to keep as much of the remaining factory applied coating intact.

Cleaning the undercarriage for me consists of spraying it down with a heavy application of diluted Simple Green.

Let it stand for 15 minutes or so, then place a lawn sprinkler under the truck- move it forward 12"-16" every 5 minutes till it reaches the front end.

After it dries, wipe off any remaining grime with a rag.

Fluid film with the pro gun.

Twice a year in the Spring and the Fall.

So far, so good for me.

This picture is from tweeks ago during my FF prep:

i like this, FF does seem to wash away easily with the power wand

would you recommend spraying the Ospho neutralizer into the internal frame before using the Eastwood internal frame coating?

Where do you live? That makes a huge difference as to how much rust proofing really matters
