I think what you're saying is correct but to clarify you don't get 15 years from the date of inspection, it's from the original date put into service. I think that's what you meant but just so someone doesn't ask 10 more times.

    EXAMPLE

My truck was put into service November 12, 2003. I got it inspected in 2010, which "activated" my warranty. I now have until November 12, 2018 ( NOT 2025) for my frame to fail inspection and get replaced. After that, I'm fucked.

Correct. You are warranted from the date your truck went into service to 15 years. If toyota were to inspect these trucks and give a 15 year warranty after the inspection/coating, that means they would potentially warrantying trucks that are 25-30 years old  And that makes no sense.

I personally think it's awesome that they're warrantying trucks to 15 years... Not many manufacturers would back their shit up for that long and pay out as well as they are.

I do not have the recall letter with me but I believe that it stated that I had until 12/12 to have the inspection, coating or replacement done. My local dealer has only 4 scheduled so far, (4th being mine) so hopefully they all have the skills needed to do it properly. Can only imagine how they will nickle and dime me though, with this bolt here, that bracket here, that hose there....not being covered so they need to replace etc etc..Im sure I won't get out of this without expense. I will have them install new shocks front and back however to avoid the labor charges!

everyone on here that has posted about their frame replacement has said that the dealership replaced a lot of parts on their own dime, no cost to the customer. :notsure:

I also don't believe I've seen a single frame replacement report on here that went totally smoothly...

Correct, 15 years from the "in service" date, I should've clarified that.
But, you dont get the 15 years unless the inspection has been completed. It's not 15 years to get the truck checked out as some have stated.

The reasoning for this is Toyota needs to know how many frames are recalled so they can have them manufactured. In 2018 they probably will have very few, if any, frames left if someone needs replacing. The company that originally made the frames is also repaying Toyota some serious cash for all the recalls. I'm sure they want actual numbers recalled so they dont overpay. That couldnt be done in a reasonable time period if Toyota allowed inspections over a 15 year warranty period. They have to be checked so everyone has a general idea of how much the recall is going to cost.

I wonder how that works, because the Dana Corp. manufactured the frames for Toyota back in the day. The Dana Corp. doesn't exist anymore...they got bought out.

I dont believe that to be the case. A quick google search of "Dana Corp pay Toyota" yielded many news articles from 2010 and 2011 stating that they were to pay $25 million for the frame recall issue. It also stated they still made very good profit for 2010 even after the 25m payment was taken from their earnings.

your right, my bad. Dana sold their "structural products unit" to a Mexican firm, not the whole company.

went over my letter again for the 2001-2004 Tacos and it does state that "based upon the condition of your specific vehicle and parts/frame availability....Toyota may determine to buyback...at 1.5x the lower of the original msrp or KBB Suggested Retail...Are there any Toyota Techs out there who know how this determination is made? I assume the nicer the truck, the lower the chance of a repurchase..Would sell mine in a heart beat at that price...115,000mi but it's pretty clean...
Too bad they dont leave the choice to customer. Some have all the extras built on and wouldnt want to give up the truck and others like mine that is all stock wouldnt mind it..

Well called dealership and have appointment for Monday, hopefully everything goes good.

TGAR why have you got this letter stating that your truck has until 12/12 and everyone on this thread states that the recall program has expired. Did you just recently buy the truck or why has toyota sent you this letter. This whole thing is very misleading and just straight confusing???(some get until 2010 some 2011 some 2012 for warraranty) TGAR do you have a copy of this letter.

Here's my thoughts on this whole thing:

    1. that if the previous owner did not get the truck inspected then all future owners are out of luck as of 12/31/11 for the frame sealant/replacement.You should not be penalized for previous owner not having it inspected and TOYOTA IS NOT MAKE EFFORTS TO INFORM CURRENT OWNERS OF THESE PROBLEMS.
    2. in the none cold climate states Toyota was and is still telling people that they need not take action if there frames are not rusting, but if it happens when they should bring it in to get inspected. Which in its definition give these people 15 yrs. to get the inspection. Why are some states getting the 15 yrs. and some states have until 12/12(IF TGAR is correct in his letter). Everyone should get this 15yr from date the truck was made period. You can't give one person something and other person something else on such a dangerous recall. If a company(Toyota) CLAIMS a problem with where product and give a 15 yr timeline it should be for everyone not just a few.

If that's true what other are saying about a deadline then I can see Toyota getting sued over this dangerous safety recall.

It looks to me as if there were two tiers of action. One for older models and then this course of action for the 2001-2004 years. And yes, you'll have until 12/31/12 to take it in for the inspection and have the sealant applied. I checked the toyota website and there is no information about this latest initiative however..I would like to find out exactly what is being replaced during this frame replacement too. I should be able to provide some new parts, shocks etc, at no additional labor costs as well. Will clarify that with my dealer.

2003 still covered if it was inspected/treated prior to 12/31/11. Mine was treated in 2009 and the stuff is all flaking off. Just failed the frame inspection today. Now a 2 week wait for a frame after the Toyota Rep. looks at it next week.

Hey all, first time poster long time lurker. I thought i'd give a shot bringing this back from the dead. I've been reading through the forums here for information on the rust. I have a 2001 Tacoma (built May 2001) that my father owned. In 2010 he took it for the rust inspection and they sprayed it with the corrosion spray. Then in 2013 or so it went back in for the spare tire issue. I own the truck now since my father has passed. Two weeks ago i started hearing loud thuds when i hit bump. I read up on here and saw it could be a few things so i took it to my mechanic. He said the frame is rusted through and the noise is from the bed hitting the cab. He said the rust is so bad it wont pass inspection and he wont even attempt fixing it.

I read in a few threads that if the truck was inspected ans sprayed back in 2010 there is a 15 year rust warranty? I have some paperwork from when it was sprayed but i dont see anything stating that.

I pln to call the dealership tomorrow... or should i call directly to Toyota?

    Thoughts/help/direction appreciated. Thanks

I actually just got off the phone with them 20 minutes ago. I got a case number assigned to me and someone is supposed to call by end of day tomorrow. I spoke to two people at Toyota and both didn't really seem to know. From what I've been reading everywhere a 2001 would be eligible for a new frame but not a buyout. If I get a new frame I'll either keep it and save up for a new truck or turn around and sell/trade for the 2016.

I'll update this thread with my results. Maybe it will help someone else in the future.
