Pretty sure I've got S mode figured out from reading the threads. (Haven't used it yet, but should have when hauling some heavy appliances etc.) My Tijuana Taco is mostly a daily driver and my commute is 8-9 miles depending on if I'm going to work or coming home. What will ECT do for my daily drive and what will it do to my d/d mileage? I'm happy with the v6 in D getting up to 27+ mpg with an average of 23+ in mildly hilly d/d.

Ect is mainly for going up Hills or when hauling, towing. Ect keeps the transmission from automatically up shifting to 5th gear keeping the rpms low to save fuel.

Ect just holds the gears longer. Holding the gears longer would mean revs are higher and stays there longer. It may save fuel more by simply not shifting as much. It’s like a tow mode; Toyota even says to use it when towing.

If how the transmission is behaving doesn’t bother you, then d mode is fine. (Don’t look further into this lol)

Make your gas milage worst: While it doesn’t quantify it, this is according to the how to Tacoma manual.

i use ECT and S mode when im driving fast around bendy roads to improve throttle response or when im drifting around a snowy parking lot, helps to keep the tires spinning. also helps when ur zipping around the highway weaving in and out of lanes

I can't see an MPG difference on my 1st Gen. Is there a noticable difference on 3rd gens?

slight difference, but it also depends on ur setup. if u have a stock truck then theres a noticeable difference in mpg, but i have heavy mud tires so it kinda benefits from keeping the rpms slightly higher

Jacado literally said what you have said. ‘Preventing up shifting’ and ‘holding gears’ is the same thing. Toyota specifically recommends ECT for use in hilly terrain in your owners manual. I think you owe @JaCado an apology.

S mode stands for Fast and Furiou(S)mode. Use it at your discretion.

I don't really use ECT unless I'm towing or driving in a city. When in a city, I feel like the truck has a little more get up and go to keep up with stop and go traffic.

I don't use it enough to know if it affects mileage, but a lot of people here have mentioned they've seen no appreciable increase in gas consumption. There's a thread somewhere here about adding a modification to have ECT on at startup, and a while ago I read that thread and lots of people have said the gas consumption hasn't changed. all anecdotal, but anecdotal data is data nonetheless (with obvious caveats).

Interesting, never thought about using ECT just for city driving to pep it up a little. Only used it for towing a boat, which obviously comes with an increase in gas consumption.

Long story short: S mode limits how high your transmission can upshift, which results in higher RPMs. ECT adjusts shift points so that at you stay in gears longer, which results in staying at higher RPMs for longer.

How gas mileage is affected depends on what you're doing in those higher RPMs. If you're barely feathering the throttle to stay in a certain range then it shouldn't take too big of a hit. If you're using it for Fast and Furiou(S)mode then you'll probably be filling up sooner.

I use S mode to hold gears (if i'm going uphill and don't want the truck constantly shifting and downshifting from 4th to 5th gear)
ECT like others have said adjusts shift points to stay in gears longer to give it some more pep, but with of course higher RPMs. For me i use ECT when i'm trying to get up speed onto the highway, or if i'm going up a big hill, or if i just want to have some more pep to weave in and out of traffic on the highways

Ect will still automatically up shifts to 5th and 6th; and it does not keep rpm low.

‘Preventing upshifting’ would be read and understood as, does not upshift.

Nobody has ever tested ECT scientifically. Maybe Toyota did, but they have not published the results publicly.

I tested it pretty extensively over 14 months. One month on, next month off. In the end, it did not impact MPG enough to worry about. Sometimes up .5mpg on the tank average, other times down .5mpg.

I saw an increase in mileage as a result of using ECT mode when my truck was on stock wheels/tires. It was gear hunting A LOT less. With the new shoes though... well. My mileage went to hell in a hand basket. Not surprised by this tho, just an FYI.
