First off I am a Glock man thru and thru. With that said and the fact that you have eliminated Glock from you list I am going to recommend the Springfield XD over the S&W. I found that the mag release on the S&W was too easy to depress by accident resulting in a single shot pistol. I'm good but not that good.

The post above dislikes the back-strap safety. I have never had an issue with any one on any gun. He personally doesn't like them, I have never given them a thought in my 30+ years of shooting. I have an XD subcompact that is both accurate and reliable, 100% of the time.

In over 10 years of carrying a 1911 on duty with SWAT, I have never seen a grip safety cause the weapon not to fire. I'm not saying it's not possible but I will say highly unlikely. I have probably 50,000 rounds through the 1911 platform myself; 1911's have their issues but I don't consider the grip safety one of them. I won't argue with your opinion of the Glock though. When people ask me to recommend a handgun for them, the Glock is always first on my list. The Glock is a simple and very reliable design out of the box and will serve anyone well. I put the M&P in the same category. The XD is a nice gun as well but I don't have enough trigger time with it to form an opinion yet.

The Colt 1911 is my choice of carry.
Either the LW Commander and 70 Series Gold Cup (very accurate!)
    Love the .45

    Use factory ammo, not reloads.
Lawyers can be hard on a reloader.

I didn't vote because I didn't want to screw up the voting.

1st rule in a gunfight is to have a gun! Any gun......

When I was looking to buy my latest pistol I wanted to try the M&P & the XD in 40cal. I had just sold 2 differnet S&W Sigma series (S&W99 in 40 and SV9E in 9mm) and wasn't ready to trust S&W. So I was set on the XD in 40. That was until I picked one up. I didn't like the grip safety or the feel of the gun in my hands, it just felt like a cheap gun. So my quest went on and a co-worker let me look at his Sig. I have owned S&W's both autos and wheel guns, Colt 1911's and wheel guns, and Glocks. And I have shot many others but the Sig 226 has to be my favorite. I still have a Colt 1911 70 ser. and Glock 17. The Colt is my safe queen and the Glock is my side arm when I'm hunting or fishing, because it's almost indestructable, but my carry gun and my home defense gun is the Sig 226 in 40cal.

I just bought an XD tonight. I would have liked a sig but i will save that for my next one in a few years. I will get a 40 for that one. I got the 9mm. The guy threw in an extra hicap mag for free. I liked the way it felt in my hand. I wouldnt have minded a glock either but still there is something i dont like about them. One of my friends who is an officer said that many of the local law enforcement has had problems with the m&ps. specifically with the mags falling out and that sorta thing. I like the M&P but i went with the XD.

Not much. Step bars, K&N air filter
My CC is a XD40 sub-compact. I love it. Not saying the M&P is not a fine pistol. Id go with the XD. My 2 cents

I have the XD40 and i wouldnt be caught with anything different for my CC. Ive taken it to the range and even done some competition shooting with it and have had ZERO problems with it. It feels solid in my hands and with over 5000 rounds though it i've never had a hiccup. My vote is the XD, it will never let you down

I couldn't believe how nice the XD 45 felt shooting it. I thought it was very smooth!
