Okay, I realize this post is almost a year old, but I have to say, the M&P was one of the most unsatisfying shooting experiences I've had. It was neither comfortable nor accurate. Unfortunately I've never tried the XD, so I didn't vote. If I had a choice I'd go for the .45 though. Nice big holes.:D

First time I'd handled an XD was last Thursday. Gotta say I was impressed with the trigger and overall feel, but didn't fire it.

I see that you already got the XD, but I'll chime in anyway as I've been looking to get one as well.

I went out the range today and rented both the XD9 and the M&P9. To start with, both felt really nice in my hands with my sausage fingers ;). The XD was noticably heavier than the M&P. I didn't like the feel of the weigh of the XD and how high it rode in my hand. As far as ergonomics went, I had to give it to the M&P. It just felt right in my hand.

Shooting: For stock triggers, I'll give the slight (very slight) nod to the XD. Punching paper told the whole story for me. The HD was all over the place. My tightest group was about 3". The M&P was on target for me. I got a nice tight grouping of about 1.5". The M&P (for me) was much easier to control and get my shots on point of aim. So, my vote goes to the Smith and Wesson M&P9. Now just to find one in FDE...

Bottom line, if you can, shoot before you buy. In the gun store, the XD felt a little nicer in the hand. However, actually shooting both opened my eyes to the M&P and now I'm sold.

if you get an M&P just send it here and get the trigger job iirc the guy is a Cop and does the mods as his part time gig. im wanting to get both of my M&Ps done the compact 9 and the full size forty..i almost bought a XDM 3.8 in9mm cause i like theidea of 20 rounds of 9mm in a compact but i came to my fiscal senses and just bought two full size mags for my M&Pc and some XGrip adapters now i have 18 rounds of capacity if need be and its lighter than the full size because of the barrel length....

Was faced with this exact same decision back in mid december lucky for me i knew two people who owned both the XDM 9mm and .40M@P. Shot both and mind you i too was already pretty much pre sold on the XDM from all the hype and talk about how it's such a nice gun, reviews, blah blah blah. Plus actually holding it in my hand and just sitting there looking at it for hours on end. Also it came with some ungodly amount of clips and such when they where running there special on it. Any ways i went out and was fortunate enough to shoot both and hands down i fell in love with the M@P.40 over the XDM 9mm. It shot like pure sex (don't ask) it felt great in my hand and was just a better gun IMHO, don't get me wrong the XDM is also a great gun but my biggest gripe with it that the M@P just shined through was with a fully loaded clip you can't drop the XDM without pushing up on it, as with the M@P you just hit it and the clip just falls right out. I know not a huge deal but for some reason it was with me plus i got the M@P on sale for a raping price vs the XDM. All in all they both are great guns and i would hesitate to buy either guns.

I just like the feel of the XD9 rather than the M&P9 but both are great guns.

I love my M&P40c...so of course I voted that way. But really just handle(preferably fire) both and get which feels best.

Theses polls are funny to me btw. People will vote by what they own. It's more a popularity contest then an accurate measurement of quality. If glock was an option it would probably destroy both simply because they are hugely popular. Personally, I can't stand glocks, they just don't feel right in my hand. If you want the best answer first handle/fire both, second research problems and issues with the design(consider warranty/customer service as well), and third look at the price.

Old thread, but still active so I'll weigh in.

My first handgun was an subcompact XD9.

My second was the M&P, and I definitely prefer it over the Springfield.

The three-grip options and the ambi mag release are nice features, and the trigger (IMO) was very smooth.

No stove pipes, feed issues, nothing.

To be fair I have never fired an XDM. Checked one out at the gun shop and just didn't like the feel of the grip. Too thin and just not a good fit for me.

Obviously SA makes some very good products. I just prefer the M&P...

Your FMJ's will kill him but JHP lead won't leave the body killing whoever stands behind your target. Plus, JHP will reek havok inside the body as it expands increasing your lethal effectiveness.

I've got a S&W m&p 9mm, love it. It's accurate and reliable. I had a gen 1 xd and hated it, but that's personal preference. End of the day, go with what you want. Both companies make excellent firearms and they will preform to spec when you need them to.

I have never had a springfield but I have a smith & wesson mp .45 And I really like it it has never jammed, it's easy to clean, it came with interchangeable hand grips "we all love moding" plus it looks good too.
