I got two keys with my truck from the dealer (I bought it brand new in April 2017). I have only ever used one of the keys. Just for giggles a few months ago, I went to use the "spare" key, and the battery in the thing is stone dead. Even though I have never used it, not even once, to try to lock/unlock the truck. Guess I'll keep using the one I have been using, and eventually look for some replacement batteries for both of them.

Too lazy to open up either key yet to see.

My VW Passat that I had before I sold it back to buy my Tacoma, I went through 2 batteries in less than 3 years. But then again,, that car also grenaded two turbos in less than 3 years....... Not that key fob batteries and turbos have anything to do with each other.

Yep. First turbo blew at only 7K miles. Dealer replaced it 100% free of cost to me. a couple years later, at around 75K miles, it blew the next turbo. Car was absolutely bone stock, no mods of any kind. Never heard anything as to why it may have happened. I really liked that car. It had good speed, and decent get up and go (since it was a turbo diesel), and it got 40 MPG for ever single one of the 85K miles I put on it. I sold it back to VW for a very good price as part of the "dieselgate" emissions scandal / class action lawsuit, in early 2017, used that money to buy my Tacoma.

I am no expert mechanic, but I have a strong hunch that the tiny little turbos on passenger cars are very delicate and crap out easily. Years back when I was heavily into the Dodge Cummins diesel performance thing, I had several friends with other VW TDI's, and they were always having turbo failures.
